Context and commentary on verse 8.3
Three short answers to three questions. But each word takes a different meaning among the acharyas. The chapter’s name, Akshara Brahma Yoga, comes from the opening words of this verse.
For Shankara the Imperishable is the Supreme Self that never decays. His authority is the Brihadaranyaka, where Yajnavalkya tells Gargi, ‘under the rule of this Imperishable’. The Imperishable here is not Om, since the thirteenth verse speaks of Om separately. Svabhava is that same Brahman present in each body as the inner self. Visarga is the offering of oblations such as charu and purodasha to the gods in sacrifice, and that is what causes beings to be born.
Ramanuja reads it differently. For him the ‘supreme Imperishable’ here is the individual self in its own nature, freed from prakriti. Svabhava is prakriti, which clings to the self but is not the self: the subtle elements and the tendencies. Karma is the union of man and woman that causes human birth, as the Chandogya’s teaching of the five fires describes. Those who seek liberation must know the first as what is to be attained, and the other two as what is to be left behind.
For Madhva the supreme Imperishable is Brahman itself. The word ‘supreme’ is there so that the Veda and the like are not taken as the ‘imperishable’ meant here. Svabhava is the jiva, the being called ‘own’, which always remains of one kind. Visarga is the Lord’s special act of creation that brings forth both the jivas and insentient things. Deciding which of these meanings is right is not the work of this page.

It can be confusing to see three great acharyas give three meanings to the same word. But it is a mark of the depth of the text. A word that opens in many directions can be thought about as many times.
In medicine too, two specialists sometimes read the same report differently. In such cases it is better to hear and understand the reasons of both than to hold blindly to what one of them says.
