Context and commentary on verse 8.21
The ‘Imperishable’ of the third verse is joined here with the supreme goal and the supreme abode. Shankara glosses ‘dhama’ as ‘place’, and calls it the supreme state of Vishnu.
Ramanuja continues his reading of the previous verse: the Imperishable here is the self standing in its own nature, without connection to prakriti. For him ‘dhama’ means ‘the sphere of rule’, the domain the Lord governs. Insentient prakriti is one such sphere, the self bound to it is another, and the liberated self freed from it is the highest.
Madhva reads verses twenty and twenty-one together. For him both the unmanifest and the Imperishable are the Lord himself, and ‘dhama’ is his own nature, which is radiance. Deciding which of these meanings is right is not the work of this page.

The word ‘home’ carries a deep meaning: the place from which one need not set out again. However good a hotel may be on a journey, it is not home.
The way people who have been in hospital for a long time say ‘I want to go home’ makes that meaning clearer still. ‘Supreme abode’ can also be understood as the name that longing takes at the spiritual level.
