ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಪರಸ್ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ತು ಭಾವೋಽನ್ಯೋಽವ್ಯಕ್ತೋಽವ್ಯಕ್ತಾತ್ಸನಾತನಃ।
ಯಃ ಸ ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಭೂತೇಷು ನಶ್ಯತ್ಸು ನ ವಿನಶ್ಯತಿ ॥ 20 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
परस्तस्मात्तु भावोऽन्योऽव्यक्तोऽव्यक्तात्सनातनः।
यः स सर्वेषु भूतेषु नश्यत्सु न विनश्यति ॥ 20 ॥

yaḥ sa sarveṣu bhūteṣu naśyatsu na vinaśyati || 20 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಾತ್ ತು (तस्मात् अव्यक्तात् तु, tasmāt avyaktāt tu) = ಆದರೆ ಆ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಕ್ಕಿಂತ (but beyond that unmanifest)
- ಪರಃ ಅನ್ಯಃ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಃ ಸನಾತನಃ ಭಾವಃ (परः अन्यः अव्यक्तः सनातनः भावः, paraḥ anyaḥ avyaktaḥ sanātanaḥ bhāvaḥ) = ಮೇಲಿರುವ, ಬೇರೆಯಾದ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾದ ಸನಾತನ ಭಾವ (another unmanifest, eternal being, higher and distinct)
- ಯಃ ಸಃ (यः सः, yaḥ saḥ) = ಯಾವುದಿದೆಯೋ ಅದು (that which)
- ಸರ್ವೇಷು ಭೂತೇಷು ನಶ್ಯತ್ಸು ನ ವಿನಶ್ಯತಿ (सर्वेषु भूतेषु नश्यत्सु न विनश्यति, sarveṣu bhūteṣu naśyatsu na vinaśyati) = ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ನಾಶವಾದಾಗಲೂ ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not perish when all beings perish)

ಆದರೆ ಆ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮೇಲಿರುವ, ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬೇರೆಯಾದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾದ ಸನಾತನ ಭಾವವಿದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ನಾಶವಾದಾಗಲೂ ಅದು ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
But beyond that unmanifest there is another unmanifest, eternal being, higher and distinct from it, which does not perish when all beings perish.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 8.20ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 8.20
ಎರಡು ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಗಳು: ಒಂದು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಲಯಗಳ ಮೂಲವಾದ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅದರ ಆಚೆಯ ಸನಾತನ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ. ಎರಡನೆಯದು ಯಾವುದು ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚಾರ್ಯರು ಬೇರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Two unmanifests: one is the unmanifest that is the source of creation and dissolution, the other the eternal unmanifest beyond it. The acharyas differ on what the second is.
ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಅಕ್ಷರವೆಂಬ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ. ‘ಪರ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಬೇರೆ, ‘ಅನ್ಯ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಲಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲೂ ಬೇರೆ, ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದು. ಅದು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾಣದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ನಾಶವಾದಾಗಲೂ ಅದು ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
For Shankara it is the supreme Brahman called the Imperishable. ‘Para’ means distinct, and ‘anya’ means different in character too, bearing no likeness. It is unmanifest because the senses cannot perceive it. It remains even when all beings, Brahma included, perish.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಕೈವಲ್ಯ ಬಯಸುವವರು ಸೇರುವ ಶುದ್ಧ ಆತ್ಮಸ್ವರೂಪ: ಅಚೇತನ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗಿಂತ ಜ್ಞಾನವೇ ಆಕಾರವಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಬೇರೆಯಾದದ್ದು, ಯಾವ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಿಂದಲೂ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗದೆ ತಾನೇ ತನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಯುವಂಥದ್ದು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಭಗವಂತನೇ, ಹದಿನೈದನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ‘ಮಾಮುಪೇತ್ಯ’ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಳಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ‘ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಪರಮಂ ವಿಷ್ಣುಂ’ ಎಂಬ ಗಾರುಡದ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಅವರು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
For Ramanuja it is the pure self that seekers of kaivalya attain: distinct from insentient prakriti because its very form is knowledge, not made manifest by any means of proof but known to itself. For Madhva the unmanifest here is the Lord himself; the ‘mam upetya’ of the fifteenth verse returns here. He gives the Garuda Purana’s phrase ‘avyaktam paramam vishnum’.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾಗುವ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಬದಲಾಗದ ಏನನ್ನೋ ಜನರು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಿಪೋರ್ಟುಗಳು ಏರುತ್ತವೆ, ಇಳಿಯುತ್ತವೆ, ದೇಹ ದುರ್ಬಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಒಳಗಿನ ‘ನಾನು’ ಅದೇ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.
Amid all that changes in a hospital, people look for something that does not. Reports rise and fall, the body weakens. Yet many feel to the end that the inner ‘I’ is the same.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ತಾತ್ವಿಕ ಆಧಾರ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲ ನಾಶವಾಗುವಾಗಲೂ ನಾಶವಾಗದ್ದು ಏನೋ ಇದೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ದುರ್ಬಲ ಕ್ಷಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಆಸರೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
This verse gives that experience a philosophical footing. The faith that something does not perish even when everything perishes has been a support to many in their weakest moments.
