Context and commentary on verse 8.26
A summary of the two paths. Shankara explains the names ‘bright’ and ‘dark’: one is bright because it carries the light of knowledge, the other dark for lack of it. They are not paths for the whole world but for those qualified for knowledge and for ritual action. They are eternal because samsara is without end.
Ramanuja grounds these in the Chandogya: those who worship with faith and austerity in the forest go to the flame, and those who in the village practise sacrifice, public works and charity go to the smoke. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
The image of the path of light and the path of smoke can be applied to everyday decisions too. Some choices lead towards clarity; others bring us back to the same confusion again and again.
It is worth noting that Shankara explains ‘bright’ as the light of knowledge. To go forward on any path, understanding comes first. Doctors see that patients who understand their illness well walk the path of treatment more steadily.
