Context and commentary on verse 8.25
This is the ‘path of smoke’, the pitriyana, the way of the ancestors. It mirrors the path of light: smoke for fire, night for day, dark for bright, south for north.
For Shankara these too are presiding deities. The ‘yogi’ here is one who has performed the rites of sacrifice, charity and public works. He enjoys the fruit of his merit in the world of the moon and returns here when it is spent. Ramanuja too says that the ‘yogi’ here is one who has done meritorious deeds.
Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text. Note that this too is a path of merit. Its fruit is the joy of heaven, but, as the seventh chapter says, ‘antavat tu phalam’ (7.23), it comes to an end.

For life today
The ‘light of the moon’ is light borrowed from the sun. The image can also be taken this way: happiness that depends on another’s light lasts a while and then fades.
In life too, some happiness rests on outside light: others’ praise, a position, a purchase. Growing a contentment that comes from within, alongside these, is of far more use in hard times such as old age and illness.
