Context and commentary on verse 9.15
‘Ekatvena prithaktvena bahudha’, these three words mark one of the clearest places in the Gita where the three traditions of commentary part.
For Shankara these are three kinds of worshippers. Some worship with the vision of ultimate truth, ‘the one supreme Brahman’, some as ‘the same Vishnu present in separate forms such as the sun and the moon’, and others in many ways, as the universal form whose face is everywhere.
For Ramanuja these are not three worshippers but a single meditation: worshipping the Lord who stands as the world of many names and forms, as one, the single being who has the whole world for his body. For Madhva ‘ekatva’ means that the one present everywhere is the one Narayana, ‘prithaktva’ his distinctness from everything, and ‘bahudha’ his many forms, seen as white, red and blue. Deciding which of these meanings is right is not the work of this page.

A heart specialist, a kidney specialist and the family doctor look at the same patient from different angles. All of them are looking at one person.
Without someone who brings all those views together, the patient gets lost among many medicines. Treatment and thought alike need the awareness that many views point to one truth.
