Context and commentary on verse 9.16
From here to the nineteenth verse runs a series of ‘aham’, ‘I am’. Madhva calls this the ‘vijnana’ promised in the first verse. This picture of every part of the sacrifice as the Lord recalls the fourth chapter’s ‘brahmarpanam’ (4.24).
Shankara unpacks the words: ‘kratu’ is the shrauta rite, ‘yajna’ the smarta rite, ‘svadha’ the food given to the ancestors. For ‘aushadha’ he gives two meanings: first, grains such as rice and barley that all beings eat, and second, medicine that relieves disease.
For Ramanuja ‘kratu’ is a sacrifice such as the jyotishtoma, ‘yajna’ the great sacrifices, and ‘aushadha’ the oblation. Madhva gives an exact definition of yajna: giving up a substance with a deity in view.

For life today
‘Aham aushadham’, I am the medicine. Shankara’s second meaning is especially close to a doctor’s heart. Here is a way of seeing medicine with reverence.
Reverence means the right dose, at the right time, for the right length of time. Stopping an antibiotic as soon as one feels a little better, or taking tablets from someone else’s prescription, is disrespect to the medicine.
