Context and commentary on verse 9.19
Summer sun, monsoon rain, life and death: the verse gathers opposing pairs into a single ‘I’. Shankara reads the first line in the form of the sun: with some rays he burns, he holds back the rain for eight months and releases it in the monsoon. Immortality is for the gods, death for mortals.
The closing words, ‘sad asac chaham’, I am being and non-being, have three readings. For Shankara ‘sat’ is what exists in some relation, and ‘asat’ its opposite. He warns that this does not mean the Lord is wholly non-existent. For Ramanuja ‘sat’ is what is present now, and ‘asat’ what was and what is yet to come. All sentient and insentient things in every state are his body. For Madhva ‘sat’ is the manifest effect, and ‘asat’ the unmanifest cause.

‘I am immortality and death’ recalls an old truth of medicine. The same drug saves life in the right dose and becomes poison when the dose is exceeded.
Water is the same. Too little in summer brings heatstroke, but for those with heart or kidney disease, how much to drink is for the doctor to say. Good and harm can live in the same thing, and the difference lies in the measure.
