ಗತಿರ್ಭರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಭುಃ ಸಾಕ್ಷೀ ನಿವಾಸಃ ಶರಣಂ ಸುಹೃತ್।
ಪ್ರಭವಃ ಪ್ರಲಯಃ ಸ್ಥಾನಂ ನಿಧಾನಂ ಬೀಜಮವ್ಯಯಮ್ ॥ 18 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी निवासः शरणं सुहृत्।
प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं निधानं बीजमव्ययम् ॥ 18 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಗತಿಃ ಭರ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಭುಃ ಸಾಕ್ಷೀ (गतिः भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी, gatiḥ bhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī) = ಗತಿ, ಪೋಷಕ, ಒಡೆಯ, ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ (the goal, the sustainer, the lord, the witness)
- ನಿವಾಸಃ ಶರಣಂ ಸುಹೃತ್ (निवासः शरणं सुहृत्, nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt) = ನೆಲೆ, ಶರಣು, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ (the abode, the refuge, the friend)
- ಪ್ರಭವಃ ಪ್ರಲಯಃ ಸ್ಥಾನಮ್ (प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानम्, prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānam) = ಹುಟ್ಟು, ಲಯ, ಆಧಾರ (the origin, the dissolution, the ground)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನಾನೇ ಗತಿ, ಪೋಷಕ, ಒಡೆಯ, ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ, ನೆಲೆ, ಶರಣು, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ. ನಾನೇ ಹುಟ್ಟು, ಲಯ, ಆಧಾರ, ನಿಧಿ, ನಾಶವಿಲ್ಲದ ಬೀಜ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
I am the goal, the sustainer, the lord, the witness, the abode, the refuge and the friend. I am the origin, the dissolution, the ground, the treasure-house and the imperishable seed.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 9.18ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 9.18
ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ಪದಗಳ ಒಂದು ಹಾರ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಕೆಲವನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಣೀಯವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ‘ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ’ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದನ್ನೂ ನೋಡುವವನು. ‘ಶರಣ’ ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರ ನೋವನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯುವವನು. ‘ಸುಹೃತ್’ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರ ಬಯಸದೆ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವವನು. ‘ನಿಧಾನ’ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಮುಂದೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸಲು ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವ ನಿಧಿ. ‘ಅವ್ಯಯ ಬೀಜ’, ಸಂಸಾರ ಇರುವವರೆಗೂ ನಾಶವಾಗದ, ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಮೊಳೆಯುವ ಬೀಜ.
A garland of twelve words. Shankara explains some of them memorably. ‘Sakshi’, witness, is one who sees what beings have done and not done. ‘Sharana’, refuge, is one who removes the pain of those in distress. ‘Suhrit’, friend, is one who does good without looking for anything in return. ‘Nidhana’ is the store that beings keep for later enjoyment. ‘Avyaya bija’, the imperishable seed, is the seed from which all sprouts, which does not perish as long as samsara lasts.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಶರಣ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿಸಿ, ಬೇಡದ್ದನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಆಶ್ರಯಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಚೇತನ, ‘ಸುಹೃತ್’ ಹಿತವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವವನು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಗತಿ’ ಮುಮುಕ್ಷುಗಳು ಸೇರುವ ಗುರಿ, ‘ಶರಣ’ ಸಂಸಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆದರಿದವನ ಆಶ್ರಯ, ‘ನಿಧಾನ’ ಪ್ರಳಯಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಾನ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ಸಾಮವೇದದ ವಾಸಿಷ್ಠ ಶಾಖೆಯ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಉದ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
For Ramanuja ‘sharana’ is the conscious one to whom one turns to gain what is wanted and ward off what is not, and ‘suhrit’ is one who wishes one’s good. For Madhva ‘gati’ is the goal that seekers of liberation reach, ‘sharana’ the refuge of one who fears samsara, and ‘nidhana’ the place where the world is laid up at the time of dissolution. For this he quotes the Vasishtha branch of the Sama Veda.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಸುಹೃತ್’ ಎಂಬ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಅರ್ಥ, ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಕಾರ ಬಯಸದೆ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡುವವನು, ಸ್ನೇಹದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶುದ್ಧ ರೂಪ.
The meaning Shankara gives for ‘suhrit’, one who does good without looking for a return, is friendship in its purest form.
ನಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅಂಥವರಿದ್ದಾರೆ: ರಾತ್ರಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಬರುವ ನೆರೆಯವರು, ಯಾರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದವರಿಗೆ ರಕ್ತದಾನ ಮಾಡುವವರು. ಅವರನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಹೇಳುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ನಾವೂ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಅಂಥವರಾಗುವುದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಸರಳ ಆಚರಣೆ.
There are such people around us: the neighbour who comes along to the hospital at night, those who give blood to people they will never know. Recognising them and thanking them, and becoming such a friend to someone ourselves, is a simple way of living this verse.
