- ತೇ ತಂ ವಿಶಾಲಂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಲೋಕಂ ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ (ते तं विशालं स्वर्गलोकं भुक्त्वा, te taṃ viśālaṃ svargalokaṃ bhuktvā) = ಅವರು ಆ ವಿಶಾಲವಾದ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸಿ (having enjoyed that vast world of heaven)
- ಪುಣ್ಯೇ ಕ್ಷೀಣೇ ಮರ್ತ್ಯಲೋಕಂ ವಿಶಂತಿ (पुण्ये क्षीणे मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति, puṇye kṣīṇe martyalokaṃ viśanti) = ಪುಣ್ಯ ಮುಗಿದಾಗ ಮರ್ತ್ಯಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ (when their merit is spent, they enter the world of mortals)
- ಏವಂ ತ್ರಯೀಧರ್ಮಮ್ ಅನುಪ್ರಪನ್ನಾಃ (एवं त्रयीधर्मम् अनुप्रपन्नाः, evaṃ trayīdharmam anuprapannāḥ) = ಹೀಗೆ ಮೂರು ವೇದಗಳ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವ (thus following the dharma of the three Vedas)
- ಕಾಮಕಾಮಾಃ ಗತಾಗತಂ ಲಭಂತೇ (कामकामाः गतागतं लभन्ते, kāmakāmāḥ gatāgataṃ labhante) = ಬಯಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವವರು ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುವುದನ್ನೇ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ (those who desire desires obtain going and coming)
Having enjoyed that vast world of heaven, they enter the world of mortals again when their merit is spent. Thus those who follow the dharma of the three Vedas, desiring desires, obtain only going and coming.
Context and commentary on verse 9.21
‘Kshine punye martyalokam vishanti’, when their merit is spent they come back: this is one of the best known lines of the Gita. It is the same story as that of the eighth chapter’s path of smoke, where they reach the light of the moon and return (8.25).
Shankara gives a sharp note on ‘gatagata’: they obtain only going and coming, and nowhere do they gain freedom. For Ramanuja they are those who, lacking the knowledge of the Vedanta, enjoy a small and unstable heaven and return again and again. The next verse, he adds, shows what sets the great souls apart.

For life today
‘When merit is spent’ calls up the picture of a bank account. Money that is spent runs out, and the account empties.
Pleasant experiences are the same. The joy of a new thing fades within weeks, and the wish for another begins. ‘Kamakamah’, those who desire desires, captures this wheel exactly.
