Context and commentary on verse 9.3
After the last verse’s high praise of this knowledge, a question is natural: if it is so easy and so excellent, why does not everyone take it up? The answer is a single word: ‘ashraddadhanah’, those without faith.
Shankara identifies them as those who take the body alone to be the self. He adds that, far from reaching the Lord, they do not touch even devotion, which is a part of the way to him. Ramanuja reads the verse as a wonder: even after gaining the fitness to take up so dear and so easy a dharma, people let it go for want of trust and stay on the road of samsara. ‘Aho mahad idam ashcharyam’, he says, what a great wonder this is.

Faith is not blind belief. It is the readiness to walk a path honestly for a while and see.
This is an everyday sight in treatment. Even with the right medicine, those who stop halfway, asking ‘what will this do’, never see its benefit. If there is a doubt, talking to the doctor before stopping is the safe course.
