How much more, then, the virtuous brahmanas and the devoted royal sages. Having come into this passing, joyless world, worship me.
Context and commentary on verse 9.33
Here the argument of the previous verse is completed: if even those without access to scripture reach the highest goal, what doubt can there be for those who have it all? Sridhara Swami explains the ‘royal sages’ as kshatriyas. Ramanuja turns the words straight towards Arjuna: you too are a royal sage, so worship me.
The two words given to this world are ‘anitya’, passing, and ‘asukha’, joyless. For Shankara it is a world that breaks apart moment by moment and has no joy. But his weight falls on what follows: you have gained a human birth, rare and the very means to life’s highest aims, so use it. For Ramanuja ‘joyless’ means afflicted by the three kinds of suffering. Sridhara Swami draws two lessons from the two words: because it is passing, do not delay, and because it is joyless, give up the labour of seeking joy here and worship me. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
There is no despair in the words ‘passing, joyless’. The awareness that life is short is an invitation to use it meaningfully.
Those who have worked long among patients in hospitals come to this awareness early. We should not postpone what matters: a word with an elder, the forgiveness we need to ask, the thanks we need to give, the prayer the heart needs.
