Context and commentary on verse 9.34
The last verse of the chapter holds its essence in four commands. Its first line returns word for word as verse 18.65, there as part of the Gita’s final teaching. Sridhara Swami says this verse closes the chapter by showing the manner of worship.
Shankara explains ‘matparayana’: I am the Self of all beings, the highest goal, the final refuge, and you, with me as your highest aim, will come to me as I am. Ramanuja gives a long description of the Lord’s form for the two words ‘manmana bhava’: wide, spotless eyes like lotus petals, the hue of a clear dark rain cloud, a radiance like a thousand suns risen at once, four arms, a shining yellow garment, crown and makara earrings. His sense is: fix your mind on such a one, unbroken like a stream of oil. The three commands that follow he explains as qualifying this same state of mind. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
The four commands touch four dimensions of a person: fixing the mind is the level of thought, devotion the level of feeling, worship the level of action and bowing the level of the body. This verse calls the whole person to the offering.
A few minutes at the start of the day reciting this verse, a single bow, and the resolve to do the day’s work as an offering: this is a simple way to practise all four together. This is how the teaching of the ninth chapter comes down into daily life.
