(English IAST)
na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogamaiśvaram|
bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ || 5 ||
- ನ ಚ ಮತ್ಸ್ಥಾನಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ (न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि, na ca matsthāni bhūtāni) = ಜೀವಿಗಳು ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲ (nor do beings dwell in me)
- ಮೇ ಐಶ್ವರಂ ಯೋಗಂ ಪಶ್ಯ (मे ऐश्वरं योगं पश्य, me aiśvaraṃ yogaṃ paśya) = ನನ್ನ ಈಶ್ವರೀಯ ಯೋಗವನ್ನು ನೋಡು (behold my divine power)
- ಭೂತಭೃತ್ ನ ಚ ಭೂತಸ್ಥಃ (भूतभृत् न च भूतस्थः, bhūtabhṛt na ca bhūtasthaḥ) = ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರುವವನು, ಆದರೆ ಜೀವಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿಲ್ಲದವನು (sustaining beings, yet not dwelling in them)
- ಮಮ ಆತ್ಮಾ ಭೂತಭಾವನಃ (मम आत्मा भूतभावनः, mama ātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ) = ನನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮವೇ ಜೀವಿಗಳನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವುದು (my self is what brings beings into being)
And yet beings do not dwell in me. Behold my divine power: my self sustains beings and brings them into being, yet does not dwell in them.
Context and commentary on verse 9.5
The last verse said ‘all beings are in me’, and now ‘they are not in me’. The Lord himself presents this turn as a wonder: ‘pashya me yogam aishvaram’, behold my divine power.
For Shankara this states the non-attachment of the self. He cites the scripture ‘asango na hi sajjate’, the unattached one clings to nothing. ‘My self’ is only a phrase that follows common usage, not a claim that the self has another self.
Ramanuja explains ‘not in me’ this way: I do not hold them as a pot holds water, I hold them by my will. ‘My self’ for him is the resolve of the Lord’s mind. It is this that brings beings into being, bears them and governs them, and he needs no benefit from them. For Madhva ‘not in me’ means they do not rest touching him as things rest touching the ground. At ‘my self’ he reads that his very body is what brings beings into being.

For life today
Bearing and clinging are different things. Good parents bear their children’s lives, but do not hold them as their property.
Caregiving needs this balance too. Those who look after elders at home must carry them with love, but not cling so tightly that they lose their own health. Caregiver exhaustion is a real health problem.
