A word once out of the mouth of a great man is like an elephant’s tusk. The word of the low, in the way of a tortoise’s neck, comes out and goes back in again.
About this subhashita
An elephant’s tusk, once grown out, does not go back in. It becomes the mark by which the animal is known. In the same way a great man’s word becomes his mark.
A tortoise puts its neck out and pulls it in when frightened. That retreat is its protection. In speech the same habit becomes cowardice. Showing one movement as natural in the animal and a defect in the man is the verse’s stroke.
In punarayati yati ca the coming back is named first and the going out after. The reversal puts the neck itself, sliding in and out, before the reader’s eye.

For life today
In a hospital a team runs on the word people give. Whether the man who said he would come and look at night actually comes is known to everyone within a week or two.
This does not mean a word can never change. When new facts come, a decision should change. But changing it openly is one thing, and pretending you never said it is another.
