- ಕಿಂ ಕರೋತಿ (किं करोति, kiṃ karoti) = ಏನು ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲದು (what can it do)
Base men who have grown a conceit of talent by living among dullards: what are these wretches before the sayings of the great poets? Water that is proud of having put out a burning palace, what can it do to the flame of light that sprouts in a jewel?
About this subhashita
The first word, jadeshu, gives the cause. The conceit of talent did not arise in them but out of where they stand. The measure of the people around becomes the measure of oneself.
Ratnankurajyoti is a fine coinage. Ankura is a sprout. The light coming off a jewel looks like a tongue of flame but is not fire, and so water cannot put it out.
The word varaka carries both abuse and pity. It dismisses a man in the act of calling him a poor thing.

For life today
It is comfortable to stay the biggest person in a small circle. Looking at the work of those who are genuinely good in the field, once or twice a year, is the remedy for it.
There is a consolation in the verse as well. Good work takes no damage from those who talk it down. The light in a jewel keeps no account of water.
