Some are puffed up and brimming with envy. Some are busy praising their own words. And alas, some have bellies with not one letter in them. So then, here and now, for whom is this labour of mine.
About this subhashita
Niraksharakukshi is a belly with no letters in it. The word rests on the old idea that learning is not stored in the head but filled into the belly, an idiom that survives in Kannada as well.
Ahaha is the sound of a sigh. It halts a list that had been moving in a dry, classifying tone, and from there on the verse stops speaking about others and speaks about itself.
The closing kam prati me sramah is not a question asked with the answer in hand. It is what is left once the list of listeners has run out. Other verses in this section lash at fools. This one simply sits down defeated.

For life today
Anyone whose careful report or carefully prepared class has landed nowhere knows this tiredness. At such a time it is easier to change the measure of how many people it must reach than to stop the work.
The verse sorts everyone into three groups and stops. In fact one or two are always left over, and finding them is the answer to the weariness in this verse.
