ಯೇ ಕೇ ವಿಚಿತ್ರರಸಶಾಲಿಷು: ಮಾಲತಿಯ ಕಂಪಿಗೂ ಮೂಗು ಮುಚ್ಚುವವರು

ಒಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಹಾಡು ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ತೇಲಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಕೆಲವರು ಕೆಲಸ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವರು ಬಾಗಿಲು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎರಡನೆಯವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮಾತಿದೆ.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ಇಂದ್ರಿಯದಿಂದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಿವಿಯಿಂದ ಮೂಗಿಗೆ. ವಸಂತತಿಲಕಾ ವೃತ್ತದ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಧಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಇಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ಯೇ ಕೇ ವಿಚಿತ್ರರಸಶಾಲಿಷು ಸತ್ಕವೀನಾಂ
ಸೂಕ್ತೇಷು ಕರ್ಣಪಥಗಾಮಿಷು ನಾದ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ ।
ತೇ ಮಾಲತೀಪರಿಮಲೇಷ್ವಪಿ ಕನ್ದಲತ್ಸು
ನಾಸಾಪುಟಂ ಕರತಲೇನ ಪಿದಧ್ಯುರೇವ ॥

ये के विचित्ररसशालिषु सत्कवीनां
सूक्तेषु कर्णपथगामिषु नाद्रियन्ते ।
ते मालतीपरिमलेष्वपि कन्दलत्सु
नासापुटं करतलेन पिदध्युरेव ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಯೇ ಕೇ (ये के, ye ke) = ಯಾರು ಯಾರು (whoever they are)
ವಿಚಿತ್ರರಸಶಾಲಿಷು (विचित्ररसशालिषु, vicitrarasaśāliṣu) = ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ರಸ ತುಂಬಿದವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (rich in varied flavour)
ಸತ್ಕವೀನಾಮ್ (सत्कवीनाम्, satkavīnām) = ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿಗಳ (of the good poets)
ಸೂಕ್ತೇಷು (सूक्तेषु, sūkteṣu) = ಚೊಕ್ಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (in their well spoken words)
ಕರ್ಣಪಥಗಾಮಿಷು (कर्णपथगामिषु, karṇapathagāmiṣu) = ಕಿವಿಯ ದಾರಿಗೆ ಬಂದವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (which have come within the path of the ear)
ನ ಆದ್ರಿಯನ್ತೇ (न आद्रियन्ते, na ādriyante) = ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (take no regard)
ತೇ (ते, te) = ಅವರು (they)
ಮಾಲತೀಪರಿಮಲೇಷು (मालतीपरिमलेषु, mālatīparimaleṣu) = ಮಾಲತಿಯ ಕಂಪುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (when the fragrance of the malati)
ಅಪಿ (अपि, api) = ಕೂಡ (even)
ಕನ್ದಲತ್ಸು (कन्दलत्सु, kandalatsu) = ಚಿಮ್ಮಿ ಹರಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ (is springing up and spreading)
ನಾಸಾಪುಟಮ್ (नासापुटम्, nāsāpuṭam) = ಮೂಗಿನ ಹೊಳ್ಳೆಯನ್ನು (the nostril)
ಕರತಲೇನ (करतलेन, karatalena) = ಅಂಗೈಯಿಂದ (with the palm)
ಪಿದಧ್ಯುಃ (पिदध्युः, pidadhyuḥ) = ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (would stop up)
ಏವ (एव, eva) = ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ (surely)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕವಿಗಳ ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ರಸ ತುಂಬಿದ ಮಾತುಗಳು ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ ಕಿವಿಯ ದಾರಿಗೆ ಬಂದರೂ ಯಾರು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅಂಥವರು ಮಾಲತಿಯ ಕಂಪು ಚಿಮ್ಮಿ ಹರಡುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗಲೂ ಅಂಗೈಯಿಂದ ಮೂಗನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರೇ ಸರಿ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Whoever takes no regard of the well spoken words of good poets, rich in varied flavour, even when they come of themselves within the path of his ear, such a man would surely clap his palm over his nostrils even while the fragrance of the malati is springing up around him.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಕರ್ಣಪಥಗಾಮಿ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಮುಖ್ಯ. ಆ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಇವರು ಹುಡುಕಿ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವು ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ ಕಿವಿಯ ದಾರಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿವೆ. ಹಾಗಿದ್ದೂ ಬೇಡ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಬೇಕು. ಆ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನೇ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲಿನ ಅಂಗೈ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The word karnapathagami carries the weight. These people need not go looking for the verses. The verses have come of themselves into the path of the ear. To refuse them even then takes an effort, and the palm in the last line is a picture of exactly that effort.

ಕಂದಲತ್ ಎಂದರೆ ಚಿಗುರುತ್ತಿರುವ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಎಲೆ ಚಿಗುರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಪು ಚಿಗುರುತ್ತದೆ. ವಾಸನೆಗೆ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ. ಮಾಲತಿ ಸುವಾಸನೆಗೆ ಹೆಸರಾದ ಬಳ್ಳಿಹೂವು.

Kandalat means sprouting. Usually it is a leaf that sprouts. Here it is a fragrance. Giving a scent the verb of a creeper’s growth is the stroke of this verse. The malati is a climbing flower famous for its scent.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಪಾಠ ಹೇಳುವವರಿಗೆ ಇದೊಂದು ಪರಿಚಿತ ನೋಟ. ಕೇಳಲು ಏನೂ ಖರ್ಚಿಲ್ಲದ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂತೂ ಕೇಳದವರು ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಭಂಗಿ ಆಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

Anyone who teaches knows this sight. There are people who sit where listening costs nothing and still do not listen. It is less that they lack interest than that having no interest has become a posture.

ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆಯೂ ಸೊಕ್ಕಲ್ಲ. ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಂಪು ಹಿಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚುರುಕನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೂ ಈ ಸಡಿಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡಬಹುದು.

Not every stopped nose is arrogance, though. Some people take to a different scent and have not met it yet. That allowance can be made without blunting the verse.
