The honest way of living is dear to them. They will not do a foul deed even if life itself is at stake. They will not beg of the wicked, and they will not ask even a friend whose means have grown slender. In calamity they stand tall and follow the footsteps of the great. Who, one wonders, laid down for the good this hard vow, like walking on a sword’s edge?
About this subhashita
Asidhara vrata is the vow of walking on the sharp edge of a sword. It stands for a very hard moral discipline. The closing question is asked in admiration, as if wondering who ever taught it.
One detail tightens the verse: even a friend of slender means is not to be asked. So alongside self respect there is concern for the friend’s own difficulty.

One need not read this as never asking for help. What it shows is the habit of thinking, before asking, whom we are asking and how heavy it would be for them.
In a money crunch the pull of a shortcut is natural. Those who have already fixed in mind a list of things they will not do may find it somewhat easier to hold their ground.
