The diseases that begin with passion cling without a break, spread through the whole body, and give rise to longing, delusion and restless discontent. Salutation to that physician without precedent, who slew them all and left not one.
About this subhashita
Raga here is attachment, desire. Calling it a disease is the pith of the verse. The first item in the list of diseases is not of the body but of the mind.
The description of the disease comes before the salutation. Unremitting, spread through every part, leaving nothing out, and producing these signs. That is the order of a clinical diagnosis. A medical book shows its method in its very first words.
Commentators do not agree on who the physician without precedent is. Because the verse leaves the name out, the salutation can be offered from within any school.

For life today
This list is familiar in modern practice too. Addiction, greed and unchecked anger are states of mind to begin with. The illnesses they bring to the body are what a physician sees every day.
Writing a prescription for these is not in the physician’s hands. Recognising them as part of the patient’s problem is. The verse puts that recognition first.
