ಓದಲು ಕೂರುವ ಮುನ್ನ, ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಹೊರಡುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೇಳುವ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಬಹಳ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ. ಇದರ ಕೊನೆಯ ಮಾತು ನೇರ: ವಿದ್ಯಾಂ ದೇಹಿ, ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡು.
ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ವಿದ್ಯಾರೂಪೆ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವುದು ಇದರ ವಿಶೇಷ. ಕೊಡುವವಳೂ ಅವಳೇ, ಕೊಡುವ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯೂ ಅವಳೇ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಮಹಾಭಾಗೇ ವಿದ್ಯೇ ಕಮಲಲೋಚನೇ ।
ವಿದ್ಯಾರೂಪೇ ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾಂ ದೇಹಿ ನಮೋಽಸ್ತು ತೇ ॥

सरस्वति महाभागे विद्ये कमललोचने ।

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸರಸ್ವತಿ (सरस्वति, sarasvati) = ಓ ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯೇ (O Sarasvati)
- ಮಹಾಭಾಗೇ (महाभागे, mahābhāge) = ಮಹಾಭಾಗ್ಯವತಿಯೇ (O greatly blessed one)
- ವಿದ್ಯೇ (विद्ये, vidye) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯೇ ಆದವಳೇ (O you who are knowledge itself)
- ಕಮಲಲೋಚನೇ (कमललोचने, kamalalocane) = ಕಮಲದಂತಹ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳವಳೇ (O lotus eyed one)
- ವಿದ್ಯಾರೂಪೇ (विद्यारूपे, vidyārūpe) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ರೂಪದವಳೇ (O embodiment of learning)
- ವಿಶಾಲಾಕ್ಷಿ (विशालाक्षि, viśālākṣi) = ಅಗಲ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳವಳೇ (O wide eyed one)
- ವಿದ್ಯಾಂ ದೇಹಿ (विद्यां देहि, vidyāṃ dehi) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡು (grant me knowledge)
- ನಮಃ ಅಸ್ತು ತೇ (नमः अस्तु ते, namaḥ astu te) = ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ (salutations to you)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಮಹಾಭಾಗ್ಯವತಿಯಾದ ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯೇ, ವಿದ್ಯೆಯೇ ಆದವಳೇ, ಕಮಲದಂತಹ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳವಳೇ, ವಿದ್ಯೆಯ ರೂಪದವಳೇ, ಅಗಲ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳವಳೇ, ನನಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡು. ನಿನಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Sarasvati, greatly blessed one, you who are knowledge itself, lotus eyed, the very form of learning, wide eyed one, grant me knowledge. Salutations to you.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮೂಲ ಗ್ರಂಥವನ್ನು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು. ಇದು ಶಾಲೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ, ಅಜ್ಜ ಅಜ್ಜಿಯರ ಬಾಯಿಂದ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಮಲಲೋಚನೇ ಬದಲು ಕಮಲಲೋಚನಿ ಎಂದಿದೆ, ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಿಲ್ಲ.
The original source of the verse cannot be fixed with certainty. It has reached children through school prayers and from grandparents. Some versions read kamalalochani instead of kamalalochane, with the same meaning.
ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ನಮಸ್ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಎಂಬ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ತಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆ ಪುಟವಿದೆ. ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ರೂಢಿಯೂ ಇದೆ.

ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಡು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುವುದು ಸುಲಭ. ಆದರೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆ ಸಿಗುವುದು ಕುಳಿತು ಓದಿದಾಗ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಓದುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಹೇಳುವ ಈ ಹತ್ತು ಸೆಕೆಂಡಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕ, ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಟದಿಂದ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತಿರುಗಿಸುವ ಸಣ್ಣ ಬಾಗಿಲಿನಂತೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
