ಕಾಳಿದಾಸನ ರಘುವಂಶ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು. ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಅರ್ಥ ಹೇಗೆ ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಲಾಗದಂತೆ ಬೆಸೆದಿವೆಯೋ ಹಾಗೆ ಬೆಸೆದಿರುವ ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರರಿಗೆ ಕವಿ ನಮಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಬರೆಯುವ, ಮಾತನಾಡುವ, ಕಲಿಸುವ ಕೆಲಸದ ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವವರು ಅನೇಕರು. ಸರಿಯಾದ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಸರಿಯಾದ ಅರ್ಥ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬರಲಿ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಇದರ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ.

ವಾಗರ್ಥಾವಿವ ಸಂಪೃಕ್ತೌ ವಾಗರ್ಥಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಯೇ ।
ಜಗತಃ ಪಿತರೌ ವಂದೇ ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪರಮೇಶ್ವರೌ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ವಾಗರ್ಥೌ ಇವ (वागर्थौ इव, vāgarthau iva) = ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥದಂತೆ (like word and meaning)
- ಸಂಪೃಕ್ತೌ (सम्पृक्तौ, sampṛktau) = ಒಂದಾಗಿ ಬೆಸೆದಿರುವ ಇಬ್ಬರನ್ನು (the two who are inseparably joined)
- ವಾಗರ್ಥಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಯೇ (वागर्थप्रतिपत्तये, vāgarthapratipattaye) = ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ (for a right grasp of word and meaning)
- ಜಗತಃ ಪಿತರೌ (जगतः पितरौ, jagataḥ pitarau) = ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಯರನ್ನು (the parents of the world)

That I may rightly grasp word and meaning, I salute Parvati and Parameshvara, the parents of the world, who are joined together like a word and its meaning.

ರಘುವಂಶದ ಆರಂಭದ ಈ ಮಂಗಲ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರ ಆರಂಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೆಂದು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರು ಹೊಗಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಾತು ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಅರ್ಥವಿಲ್ಲ, ಅರ್ಥ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಿವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯರ ಸಂಬಂಧವೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಎಂಬುದು ಉಪಮೆಯ ತಿರುಳು.
Scholars praise this opening verse of the Raghuvamsha as one of the most beautiful beginnings in Sanskrit poetry. There is no meaning without a word and no word without meaning, and the bond of Shiva and Shakti is like that: this is the heart of the simile.
ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪರಮೇಶ್ವರೌ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪ ಮತ್ತು ರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂದು ಬಿಡಿಸಿ, ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯ ಪತಿ ಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ರಮೆಯ ಒಡೆಯ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಎಂಬ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ತೆಗೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
Some commentators also split the compound as parvatipa and rameshvara, the lord of Parvati and the lord of Rama, that is Lakshmi, finding both Shiva and Vishnu in the same words.

ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥ ಬೇರೆಯಾದಾಗಲೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲೂ ತಪ್ಪು ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದು. ನಾವು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು ಒಂದು, ಕೇಳಿದವರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿದ್ದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು. ಏನನ್ನಾದರೂ ಹೇಳುವ ಮುನ್ನ, ಅದರ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೇಳುವವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಲು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
