ದೇಹ ದುರ್ಬಲವಾದಾಗ, ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಆವರಿಸಿದಾಗ ಗಂಗಾಜಲವೇ ಔಷಧ, ನಾರಾಯಣನೇ ವೈದ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು. ಹಿರಿಯರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವವರ ಬಳಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ.
ಇದರ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲು, ವೈದ್ಯೋ ನಾರಾಯಣೋ ಹರಿಃ, ಕೆಲವು ವೈದ್ಯರ ಕೋಣೆಗಳ ಗೋಡೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೂ ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಶರೀರೇ ಜರ್ಜರೀಭೂತೇ ವ್ಯಾಧಿಗ್ರಸ್ತೇ ಕಲೇವರೇ ।
ಔಷಧಂ ಜಾಹ್ನವೀತೋಯಂ ವೈದ್ಯೋ ನಾರಾಯಣೋ ಹರಿಃ ॥

शरीरे जर्जरीभूते व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेवरे ।
औषधं जाह्नवीतोयं वैद्यो नारायणो हरिः ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಶರೀರೇ ಜರ್ಜರೀಭೂತೇ (शरीरे जर्जरीभूते, śarīre jarjarībhūte) = ದೇಹ ಜರ್ಜರಿತವಾದಾಗ, ದುರ್ಬಲವಾದಾಗ (when the body is worn out)
- ವ್ಯಾಧಿಗ್ರಸ್ತೇ ಕಲೇವರೇ (व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेवरे, vyādhigraste kalevare) = ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಹಿಡಿದಾಗ (when the body is seized by disease)
- ಔಷಧಮ್ (औषधम्, auṣadham) = ಔಷಧ (the medicine)
- ಜಾಹ್ನವೀತೋಯಮ್ (जाह्नवीतोयम्, jāhnavītoyam) = ಗಂಗೆಯ ನೀರು (is the water of the Ganga)
- ವೈದ್ಯಃ (वैद्यः, vaidyaḥ) = ವೈದ್ಯನು (the physician)
- ನಾರಾಯಣಃ ಹರಿಃ (नारायणः हरिः, nārāyaṇaḥ hariḥ) = ನಾರಾಯಣನಾದ ಹರಿ (is Narayana, Hari)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ದೇಹ ಜರ್ಜರಿತವಾದಾಗ, ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಾಗ, ಗಂಗೆಯ ನೀರೇ ಔಷಧ, ನಾರಾಯಣನಾದ ಹರಿಯೇ ವೈದ್ಯ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
When the body is worn out and seized by disease, the water of the Ganga is the medicine, and Narayana, Hari, is the physician.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this verse
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಮೂಲ ಗ್ರಂಥವನ್ನು ಖಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲಾಗದು, ಇದು ಹಿರಿಯರ ಬಾಯಿಂದ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಜಾಹ್ನವೀ ಎಂದರೆ ಜಹ್ನು ಮುನಿಯ ಮಗಳಾದ ಗಂಗೆ. ಅನೇಕ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯವರಿಗೆ ತುಳಸಿ ತೀರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ.
The original source of this verse cannot be fixed; it has passed from elders to the next generation by word of mouth. Jahnavi means Ganga, the daughter of the sage Jahnu. In many homes it is said while giving the sick a sip of tulasi water.
ಇದೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆಪದುದ್ಧಾರಕ ರಾಮ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಜರ್ಝರೀಭೂತೇ ಎಂಬ ಪಾಠವಿದೆ. ಆ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಅರ್ಥಸಹಿತ ಬೇರೆ ಪುಟ ಈ ತಾಣದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಆಸರೆ ಕೊಡುವ ಮಾತಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕು. ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಆಸರೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದು ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಬದಲಲ್ಲ.
The verse is best read as words that support the mind. Prayer gives the mind support in days of illness, but it does not replace medical treatment.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ವೈದ್ಯರಾಗಿ ನಾವು ದಿನವೂ ಕಾಣುವ ಒಂದು ಸಂಗತಿ ಇದೆ. ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಆಧುನಿಕವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದರ ಫಲ ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ವೈದ್ಯೋ ನಾರಾಯಣೋ ಹರಿಃ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಭರವಸೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ, ವೈದ್ಯನಿಗೆ ವಿನಯವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
As doctors we see one thing every day: however modern the treatment, its outcome is never wholly in our hands. The words vaidyo narayano harih give the patient hope and teach the doctor humility.
