Apaduddharaka means the one who lifts us out of calamity. The first verse here is the well known one recited before any reading of the Rama story, a line that bows again and again to the Rama who takes away misfortune and gives prosperity. In the three verses that follow, the names of Rama come one after another, each with a salutation.

In the fifth and sixth verses stands the picture of Rama and Lakshmana, their bows drawn to the ear, guarding the reciter in front, behind and on both sides. The last four verses are ones that travel together in many collections. They place the uttering of the divine names and the meditation on Narayana at the centre.

I bow again and again to Sri Rama, who takes away calamities, who gives every kind of prosperity, and who is the delight of the world.
I bow to that Ramachandra who ends the pain of the afflicted, who wipes away the fear of the frightened, and who is the rod of death to those who bear him enmity.
Salutation to him who holds the bow in his hand and has fitted the arrow to the string. Salutation to Rama, who cut down all the demons and who wards off calamity.
Salutation to Rama, to Ramabhadra, to Ramachandra, to the ordainer of creation, to the lord of the Raghus, to the Lord, to the husband of Sita.
May the mighty Rama and Lakshmana, their bows drawn full to the ear, guard me in front, behind and on both sides.
May the young Rama, ready for battle, wearing armour, sword in hand and bearing bow and arrows, walk always before me with Lakshmana and protect me.
The uttering of the names Achyuta, Ananta and Govinda is itself the medicine, and by it all diseases perish. Truly, truly I say it.
True, true, and true again, this is said with the arm raised high: there is no scripture higher than the Veda and no god higher than Keshava.
When the body has worn out and disease has taken hold of the frame, the water of the Ganga is the medicine and Narayana Hari is the physician.
Having churned all the scriptures and pondered again and again, one conclusion stands well settled: Narayana Hari is the one to be meditated upon.

About this hymn

This is a short hymn gathered from several sources. What we print is the text of ten verses that appears on stotranidhi.com under the name Sri Rama Apaduddharana Stotra. No author is named anywhere, and the metre is anushtubh.

The first four verses are verses of salutation, listing the names of Rama. The fifth and sixth are the familiar verses of protection, and the same two are found in the Rama Raksha Stotra. The four verses from the seventh to the tenth turn from the name of Rama to the names of Vishnu, and they form a group that travels together in many collections.

The seventh verse says that diseases perish, and the ninth calls the water of the Ganga the medicine and Narayana the physician. We have translated both as they stand. Prayer and recitation are not a substitute for medical treatment.

On the text: in the seventh verse we have corrected the source reading namoccharana to nama uccharana, with the long vowel, so that it reads as the uttering of the names. Other editions differ in small ways, and some collections give these verses in a different order.

A cyclist standing at a closed level crossing gate has nothing left to do but wait. When the gate will lift is not in his hands, but how he spends those minutes is. Times of trouble are much the same, and setting aside what is not ours to decide while repeating one line over and over is a way of holding the mind steady.
