O god, the mother who is devotion looks after the infant who is the devotee in this way. With tears of joy she spreads the thrill over his body, she makes purity his covering, she fills his belly with the nectar of your deeds held at the mouth of the conch that is speech, she guards his body with rudraksha beads and sacred ash, and she lays him down on the cot that is thinking of you.
Context and commentary on verse 62
The previous verse gave a definition of devotion. This one sets that same devotion up as a mother and makes the devotee the infant in her arms. That is a large turn. Until now devotion was what we had to do, and here she is the one who does things for us. There is a neatness in the construction as well. Who the subject of the verse is becomes clear only in the last quarter, and until then the reader has only a list of acts in front of him. The moment the word mother arrives, every item on that list falls into its place.
The acts run like this. As a baby is rubbed with oil and bathed, here the whole body thrills with tears of joy. As a baby is wrapped in clean cloth, here purity is the covering. As it is fed until its belly is full, here the food is the nectar of Shiva’s deeds. As a black thread is tied against the evil eye, here there are rudraksha beads and ash. And as it is finally laid in the cradle, here meditation on Shiva is the cot. All five come in the order of one evening’s care, from the bath to sleep, and it is that order which keeps the picture from turning into a list.
The conch has a real background. In many households it was once the practice to give a newborn milk or water from the tip of a conch shell. That is why the poet has made speech the conch and the stories of Shiva the milk that passes through it. The turn by which words leaving the mouth become food entering it is well made. One thing must be added plainly. Today the feeding of an infant follows a doctor’s advice, and on grounds of hygiene present health advice does not approve of using a vessel such as a shell. The picture in the verse belongs to the household of its own time and is not an instruction about care.
Two words about the rudraksha and the ash as well. The rudraksha is the seed of a tree, worn by Shaivas as a string of beads, and its name says ‘the eye of Rudra’. Bhasma is burnt ash, worn in three lines on the forehead, and it carries the reminder that everything comes to ash in the end. The verse calls these a guarding, and it is right to read that in the sense of the thread a mother ties. They are marks of faith, and not a substitute for the care of a child’s health or for medicine.
Two words in the first quarter deserve notice. Tears and the thrill of the hair both appear in the list of sattvika bhavas in the poetics, that is, the signs by which an inner feeling shows itself on the body without being willed. So the poet has used the outward signs of devotion as the mother’s first act of care. The vocative deva, dropped into the middle of the third quarter, reminds us that the whole is being said to Shiva. That the same word is heard twice in the pair bhaktijanani and bhaktarbhaka is also done on purpose. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

For life today
At a pharmacy counter, after the tablets have been taken down against the prescription, someone writes on the cover how many times a day, and puts what is to be taken after food into a separate bag. Nobody asked for that.
Care is mostly made of small additions of this kind. Rather than saying that we built up our own faith, it is nearer the truth to remember that marks someone wrote out for us like this have held it in place.
