ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Its own seeds reach the ankola tree, the needle reaches the magnet stone, the faithful wife her own lord, the creeper the tree it climbs, and the river the sea that is the lord of rivers. As these reach their own in this world, so when the movement of the mind comes to the two lotus feet of Pashupati and stays there always, that is what is called devotion.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 61ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 61
Of the hundred verses of the Shivananda Lahari this is the one most often quoted. When the question is asked what devotion means, it is usual to take up this verse alone and unpack it. Several earlier verses had compared the mind to a bird, a swan or a creeper and asked it to settle at Shiva’s feet. Here the poet stops describing and gives a definition. Five comparisons fill the first two quarters, their application the last two, and the whole verse is a single sentence.
The ankola is a real tree, known in Kannada as ankole and botanically as Alangium salviifolium, a small tree with oily seeds found in our forests. The saying that its fallen seeds return to the trunk of their own tree is old in Sanskrit poetry, and the poet has taken it up as his first comparison. It is as well to say plainly that this is the lore of the poets and that botany does not bear it out. Traditional medicine has references to the use of the root bark of this tree, which is not the subject of this page, and nothing here is advice about any remedy. The strength of the image lies elsewhere. In the other four the one who moves reaches something other than itself, and in this first one alone it reaches its own origin.
The second is the needle and the lodestone. The very name ayaskanta says ‘the beloved of iron’, so the pull is not from one side only. The third is the faithful wife and her lord. This is a picture of the poet’s own society, and the point of the comparison is that the direction of love does not change. The fourth is the creeper and the tree it climbs. The fifth is the river and the sea. The list rises from the small to the large. The seed travels a few hand’s breadths, the needle clings in an instant, fidelity lasts a whole life, the creeper goes on as it grows, and the river runs hundreds of miles to the sea and there loses even its name. So the last comparison points to the last stage of devotion as well. Besides, in the first two the goal is named first and the one who moves afterwards, and in the last three that order is reversed.
The words of the definition should be noticed slowly. The poet does not say that devotion is love, he says it is a chetovritti. A vritti is a movement that rises in the mind, a wave. In the language of Yoga the word chittavritti carries the same sense. The weight of the verse is that it is not enough for the wave to touch the feet: it must reach them and stay there always. So one occasion of tears and one hour of excitement do not satisfy this definition. There are works that give a definition of devotion, the Narada Bhakti Sutra and the Shandilya Bhakti Sutra among them, and they speak from the side of love, while this verse speaks from the side of where the mind comes to rest. That sits easily with the Advaita position that a mode of mind held to one place becomes the road to knowledge.
Two small points of grammar are worth noticing. Although there are five subjects, the verb prapnoti stays in the singular, because the same action applies to each pair separately. The word iha indicates that the examples are ones seen in this world, so the poet does not point to heaven to support what he says. The final sa picks up chetovritti, and bhakti too is a feminine noun, so the equation of the two is smooth at the level of the words themselves. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
