‘This man will come to birth, and his mind is hard. Let me dance upon it.’ Thinking so, for my protection, you practised the soft placing of your feet beforehand on the ground of the mountain. If not, when divine houses within, couches of flowers and altars were mostly to be had, why, O Shambhu, this dancing of yours on bare slabs of rock?
Context and commentary on verse 80
The verse moves in the shape of a playful inference. The poet notices a fact, that Shiva dances on the bare rock of the mountain. Then he imagines a reason for it: it was rehearsal for dancing on the hard mind of someone yet to be born. There is a little laughter and a little shame in his claiming that someone as himself.
The first part of the opening quarter is direct speech, and the word ‘iti’ closes it. The words are Shiva’s own, spoken to himself. ‘Natani’ is the first person imperative of the root nat, let me dance. ‘Madrakshayai’ is a dative, for my protection. ‘Purabhyasitah’ is the sandhi of pura and abhyasitah, practised beforehand.
The word for hardness comes twice in the verse, ‘kathinam’ of the mind and ‘shilatala’ of the ground. The hardness of stone and the hardness of a mind meeting in one word returns later in this hymn. Besides that, in the previous verse the softness of the feet was the cause of worry. Here the same softness appears as a skill Shiva has trained for, and the two verses take one picture from two sides.
A fine play lies hidden in the list of the second half. ‘Sumanas’ means a flower and also one of good mind. So ‘sumanastalpa’ holds both a couch of flowers and the couch that is a good mind. In that second sense the question of the verse grows sharper: when soft minds are there in plenty, why upon what is hard? Many read this second sense, and it suits the argument of the verse well.
There is a turn behind the closing question. The devotee draws the god’s dance towards himself, but not in order to boast. It is a roundabout way of admitting how hard his own mind is. Instead of saying plainly that his mind is stone, he says that the stone obliged even the god to prepare for it. The metre is that of the previous verse, nineteen syllables to a quarter, in the arrangement of shardulavikridita.

It is worth watching what a potter’s hands do while the lump of clay turns on the wheel. Press hard and the lump slides away to one side. Leave off pressing and the pot never rises. It takes years for the hands to learn the pressure that lies between.
Being with a hard mind works in the same way. With someone at home who will not bend, or with a habit of our own that will not bend, force does nothing. What is hard has to be touched with a soft step, and that softness is itself something to be learnt by practice.
