ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Mahesha, lord of Uma, some part of the day in the worship of your lotus feet, some in meditation and absorption and in bows, some in hearing your stories, some in looking upon you, some in praises: he who gladly reaches such a state as this, with his mind offered to you, is liberated while still living.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 81ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 81
The verse is built as a reckoning. The word ‘kanchit’ returns again and again, and it means ‘some, an amount not stated’. So the verse is not measuring out the day in hours but distributing it in portions. It does not ask for the whole day at once, yet no portion is left empty.
The modes named can be looked at in the order they come. Archana is worship done with the hands, dhyana and samadhi are states in which the mind stays in one place, nati is the bending of the body, katha-karnana is the work of the ear, avekshana the work of the eye, and nuti the work of the mouth. Hands, mind, body, ear, eye and mouth each get a share. Many readers find this close to the list of nine kinds of devotion counted in tradition, though the verse does not name that list.
The last words are ‘jivan sa muktah’, he is liberated while living. To speak of liberation not as something kept for after death but as a present condition is the position of Advaita, and this verse also gives the marks of that condition. Two words deserve notice, ‘muda’ and ‘tvadarpitamana’. The first says gladly, so what is described is not a discipline kept with clenched teeth. The second says his mind has been offered, so what makes these six acts worship is not their number but the direction in which the mind is turned.
Two small points of grammar. ‘Kanchitkalam’ stands in the accusative, which is how Sanskrit states an extent of time. All the other forms are instrumental plurals, archanaih, samadhibhih, natibhih, karnanaih, avekshanaih, nutibhih, that is, ‘by means of these’. Being plural, they suggest not single occasions of worship but something that comes round again and again. In the third quarter ‘kanchit’ occurs twice in succession. Many take the extra one as a portion left unnamed, while others attach the last one to what follows, reading ‘for some time in such a state’.
This verse gathers the modes of devotion that came separately in many earlier verses and sets them out as the reckoning of a single day. The next verse, the eighty-second, holds up Hari as the great example of such worship. Counting the metre, each quarter has nineteen syllables, and the arrangement of long and short is that of shardulavikridita.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
The duty board on a hospital wall shows the day parcelled out into shifts. Morning, afternoon, night, and against each stretch of hours a name. No stretch is left there as nobody’s responsibility.
Our own day can be set out in the same way. Years can go by in waiting for one large block of time to come free for what matters. If it is placed instead in the small pieces that do come free, the reckoning at the end of the day looks different.
