Your step is fit only ever to move upon the petals of the lotus that is a yogi’s mind. Then how, O Shambhu, did it break the hard door that is the chest of Yama the king? Your pair of feet is exceedingly soft. Alas, my mind keeps worrying over it. O all-pervading one, bring those feet within sight of my eyes, and let me press them with my hand.
Context and commentary on verse 79
There is a story behind the verse. When the hour of death came, the boy Markandeya clung to the linga and would not let go, and tradition tells that Shiva came out and struck Yama down with his foot and saved him. Hence Shiva’s names Kalasamhara and Mrityunjaya. The verse does not name Markandeya. With the single phrase ‘Yama’s chest’ it brings the story to mind.
The pith of the verse is an affectionate worry. What troubles the devotee is not his own case but the sole of the god’s foot. Strike something soft against something hard and it is the soft that is hurt, which is the plain experience of the world. Holding to that, he draws in his breath with ‘ha’. This is hyperbole, and it is the sort of excess that rises naturally where there is love.
‘Kavata’ is the leaf of a door. There is a picture in calling Yama’s chest a door, since it shuts and blocks a creature’s way, and breaking it opens the way. ‘Kshati’ means both a breaking and a wound. In the main sense it is the breaking done to Yama’s chest. Many read, however, that the tone of the verse also carries the doubt whether the foot itself was hurt.
The last quarter holds two requests, and they come one behind the other. First ‘kuru’, make those feet visible to my eye. Then ‘samvahaye’, let me press and knead them with my hand. Samvahana is the service of the feet, one of the upacharas of worship. The previous verse spoke of an intellect taught the rites of attendance, and here he asks for the chance to perform one of those very rites.
Two small points of grammar. ‘Chintaya’ at the end of the third quarter and ‘tyetat’ at the start of the fourth make up ‘chintayati etat’, so the verb itself is broken across the boundary of the quarter. Besides that, ‘yamarad’ is the sandhi form of yamaraj. A word about the metre. Each quarter has nineteen syllables, in the arrangement of shardulavikridita, which is a long stride after the twelve-syllable quarter of the previous verse.

The work that goes on in a hospital physiotherapy room looks small from outside. A leg bent a little by hand, a slow press, a count of how many steps were walked today. Yet recovery moves forward there largely through the touch of a hand and through daily repetition.
What this verse asks for is a service of just that kind, the chance to knead the feet with one’s own hand. It is hard to stand before someone dear to us with nothing at all to do. When one small task comes to hand, our care finds a way out.
