(English IAST)
kānpṛcchāmaḥ surāḥ svarge nivasāmo vayaṃ bhuvi |
kiṃ vā kāvyarasaḥ svāduḥ kiṃ vā svādīyasī sudhā ||
- ಸುರಾಃ ಸ್ವರ್ಗೇ (सुराः स्वर्गे, surāḥ svarge) = ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಸ್ವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ (the gods are in heaven)
- ನಿವಸಾಮಃ ವಯಮ್ ಭುವಿ (निवसामः वयम् भुवि, nivasāmaḥ vayam bhuvi) = ನಾವು ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ (we dwell on earth)
- ಕಿಮ್ ವಾ (किम् वा, kim vā) = ಅಥವಾ (or whether)
- ಕಾವ್ಯರಸಃ ಸ್ವಾದುಃ (काव्यरसः स्वादुः, kāvyarasaḥ svāduḥ) = ಕಾವ್ಯದ ರಸ ಸಿಹಿಯೋ (the flavour of poetry is sweet)
- ಕಿಮ್ ವಾ ಸ್ವಾದೀಯಸೀ ಸುಧಾ (किम् वा स्वादीयसी सुधा, kim vā svādīyasī sudhā) = ಅಥವಾ ಅಮೃತ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಸಿಹಿಯೋ (or nectar is sweeter)
Whom shall we ask? The gods live in heaven and we live on earth. Is the flavour of poetry the sweeter, or is nectar sweeter still?
About this subhashita
The logic is simple. The gods have tasted nectar and men have tasted poetry. No one has tasted both. So there is no one who can compare them. That is the smile of the verse.
This is a clever form of praise. Rather than saying outright that poetry is sweeter than nectar, it leaves the verdict to the reader’s own mind.
In Sanskrit the word rasa means both taste and the felt experience of poetry. The verse stands on both senses at once.

For life today
Arguing about which of two incomparable things is better happens in our daily conversation too. The verse smilingly puts one question to that argument. Do we have the experience needed to compare?
The nectar of heaven is out of reach. A good poem is available today. It is a waste to argue about what we do not have and leave aside the sweetness we can hold.
