ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆತನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇ ದೊಡ್ಡಸ್ತಿಕೆಯೆ? ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾದ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಕುಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಲೆಯಿಲ್ಲ, ಕುಲವಿಲ್ಲದ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಗೌರವವೂ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕಿಂ ಕುಲೇನ ವಿಶಾಲೇನ ವಿದ್ಯಾಹೀನಸ್ಯ ದೇಹಿನಃ ।
ಅಕುಲೀನೋಽಪಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾವಾನ್ದೇವೈರಪಿ ಸ ಪೂಜ್ಯತೇ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಕಿಮ್ ಕುಲೇನ ವಿಶಾಲೇನ (किम् कुलेन विशालेन, kim kulena viśālena) = ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕುಲದಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ (what use is a great family)
- ವಿದ್ಯಾಹೀನಸ್ಯ ದೇಹಿನಃ (विद्याहीनस्य देहिनः, vidyāhīnasya dehinaḥ) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ (to a man without learning)
- ಅಕುಲೀನಃ ಅಪಿ (अकुलीनः अपि, akulīnaḥ api) = ಕುಲವಿಲ್ಲದವನಾದರೂ (even one of no family)
- ವಿದ್ಯಾವಾನ್ (विद्यावान्, vidyāvān) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯುಳ್ಳವನು (if he has learning)
- ದೇವೈಃ ಅಪಿ (देवैः अपि, devaiḥ api) = ದೇವತೆಗಳಿಂದಲೂ (even by the gods)
- ಸಃ ಪೂಜ್ಯತೇ (सः पूज्यते, saḥ pūjyate) = ಅವನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾನೆ (he is honoured)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕುಲದಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ? ಕುಲವಿಲ್ಲದವನಾದರೂ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯುಳ್ಳವನನ್ನು ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
What use is a great family to a man without learning? One of no family at all, if he has learning, is honoured even by the gods.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ನಿಲುವು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹುಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದದ್ದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಗಳಿಸಿದ್ದೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯದು.
This stand recurs in Sanskrit subhashitas. That what is earned counts for more than what is inherited is an old saying among them.
ದೇವೈರಪಿ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒತ್ತು ಇದೆ. ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ ಎತ್ತರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
The phrase devairapi carries the emphasis. Not only men but the gods, and with that the praise rises.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಈ ಮಾತು ಬರೆದ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಎಷ್ಟು ದಿಟ್ಟವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಕುಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ವಿದ್ಯೆಗೆ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆದ ಮಾತು.
It is worth noticing how bold this was in its time. In a society where everything rested on birth, this line opened a door for learning.
ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಇದರ ಪಾಠ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಯಾವ ಮನೆತನದಿಂದ ಬಂದವರು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಏನನ್ನು ಕಲಿತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.
The lesson holds today. For children, what they have learnt stands longer than which house they came from.
