About this subhashita
Shila is the grain left in the field after harvest. Living by gleaning it is shilonchhavritti, an austere vow. It carries the picture of a life that burdens no one and lives on what others have left.
This verse too occurs in Vidura’s counsel in the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata (5.34.31), where the first line reads suvyahritani sudhiyam and the same reading shilahari is found. Like the previous verse, this is a maxim built around the word dhira, the steady one: there the good word is put to work, here it is patiently gathered.

For life today
Not only great books: a patient’s remark, an elder’s experience, a child’s question are also grains worth gleaning.
There is no way to become wise in a day. Glean one grain a day and by the year’s end three hundred and sixty-five have been gathered.
