Śīkṣāṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ means, we shall explain phonetics. Six words follow. The last line says, thus the chapter on phonetics has been told. It is a table of contents for the whole science.
In the Taittiriya tradition kṣa is pronounced like khṣa, which is why the text is written śīkhṣām. The long śī in place of śi is also a Vedic form, and Shankaracharya notes it in his commentary.
Varṇa means the letters from a to ha. Each letter should be said from its proper place: ka from the throat, ca from the palate, ṭa from the dome of the palate (mūrdhā), ta from the teeth, pa from the lips. The Paniniya Shiksha names eight places where letters are produced:
The chest, the throat, the head, the root of the tongue, the teeth, the nose, the lips and the palate. The same Shiksha counts the letters of Sanskrit as sixty-three or sixty-four, including the short, long and prolonged vowels, the consonants, the anusvara and the visarga.
Vedic recitation also has letter features particular to each branch. In the Shakala text of the Rig Veda, a ḍa between two vowels becomes ḷa, which is why the first mantra of the Rig Veda reads agnimīḷe. In the Krishna Yajurveda the anusvara becomes gum in some places. These features have to be learnt from a teacher of that branch.
Svara means the pitches called udatta, anudatta and svarita. In the Veda, accent is part of the meaning of a word. A word with the same letters can mean something else if its accent changes. For how to read the accent marks, and for the story of indrashatru, see the page on svara.
Many traditions also use a small movement of the hand or head to show the accent. It is an aid to learning. But the Shiksha counts reciting while shaking the head as a fault, as we will see below.
Mātrā means the time taken to say a letter: one unit for a short vowel, two for a long one, three for a prolonged one, and half a unit for a consonant without a vowel. A well known verse quoted with the Paniniya Shiksha helps us remember this through the calls of birds and animals:
The blue jay calls in one unit, the crow in two, the peacock in three and the mongoose in half. In Vedic texts the prolonged vowel is sometimes shown by the numeral 3 beside the letter. The double-stroke svarita (᳚) over a long vowel also signals that the syllable is drawn out a little.
A wrong length spoils the metre, and sometimes changes the meaning too. Kannada speakers most often make two mistakes: shortening long vowels, and adding a u after a final consonant.
Balam does not simply mean strength. Shankaracharya explains it as prayatna, effort: the work the mouth, tongue and breath do to produce a letter. The difference between ka and kha is one of breath, unaspirated and aspirated. The difference between ka and ga is one of voice, voiceless and voiced. Whether the tongue makes full contact, slight contact or leaves the passage open is also part of it.
ಎಷ್ಟು ಬಲ ಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾಣಿನೀಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಉಪಮೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ:
For how much force is needed, the Paniniya Shiksha gives a beautiful simile:
A tigress carries her cub in her teeth. She holds it gently so it is not hurt, and firmly so it does not fall. Letters should be spoken the same way. Too much pressure makes them harsh, too little makes them unclear.
Here sāma does not mean the Sama Veda. As Shankaracharya explains it, it means evenness: saying the letters at a middle pace, neither too fast nor too slow, and evenly. Rushing some syllables and dragging others spoils this evenness.
The Shiksha tradition speaks of three speeds: fast for private practice, middle for use in ritual, and slow when teaching students.
ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪಾಠಕನ ಆರು ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಪಾಠಕನ ಆರು ದೋಷಗಳನ್ನೂ ಪಾಣಿನೀಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ:
The Paniniya Shiksha lists the six virtues of a good reciter and the six faults of a poor one:
Virtues: sweetness, clarity of letters, correct division of words, good pitch, confidence, and the ability to hold the rhythm. - ದೋಷಗಳು: ಹಾಡಿನಂತೆ ರಾಗ ಎಳೆಯುವುದು, ಅತಿ ವೇಗ, ತಲೆ ಅಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸುವುದು, ಬರೆದದ್ದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಯೇ ಓದುವುದು, ಅರ್ಥ ತಿಳಿಯದಿರುವುದು, ಕ್ಷೀಣ ಧ್ವನಿ.
Faults: singing it like a song, rushing, shaking the head, only reading from a written page, not knowing the meaning, and a weak voice.
Santāna means continuity. Shankaracharya explains it as sandhi. When words join, their letters change, and saying those joins correctly is santāna. There should be no needless stops between words, and letters that belong together should not be pulled apart.
In the Vedic hymn texts on this site, the small hyphen seen in forms such as śa-nno and ta-nno shows exactly this join. It is not a place to stop. It signals that two words meet there, and it should be said in one breath.
To guard the Vedic text against error, the tradition developed ways of reciting the same mantra in several orders. The purpose is to secure the joins and the accents. If the words of a mantra are a, b, c, d:
- ಸಂಹಿತಾ ಪಾಠ: ಸಂಧಿಸಹಿತ ಸಹಜ ಪಾಠ. ಅಬಕಡ.
Saṃhitā pāṭha: the natural text with all sandhi. abcd. - ಪದ ಪಾಠ: ಸಂಧಿ ಬಿಡಿಸಿ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಪದವನ್ನು ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ. ಅ, ಬ, ಕ, ಡ.
Pada pāṭha: sandhi undone, each word separately. a, b, c, d. - ಕ್ರಮ ಪಾಠ: ಎರಡೆರಡು ಪದಗಳ ಜೋಡಿ. ಅಬ, ಬಕ, ಕಡ.
Krama pāṭha: words in overlapping pairs. ab, bc, cd. - ಜಟಾ ಪಾಠ: ಜೋಡಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ, ಹಿಂದೆ, ಮತ್ತೆ ಮುಂದೆ. ಅಬ ಬಅ ಅಬ, ಬಕ ಕಬ ಬಕ.
Jaṭā pāṭha: each pair forward, backward and forward again. ab ba ab, bc cb bc. - ಘನ ಪಾಠ: ಮೂರು ಪದಗಳ ಹೆಣಿಗೆ. ಅಬ ಬಅ ಅಬಕ ಕಬಅ ಅಬಕ.
Ghana pāṭha: a weave of three words. ab ba abc cba abc.
When words are said in reverse, their sandhi and accent change, and these must also be said correctly by rule. Because each word recurs in several combinations, even one wrong letter is noticed at once. The title ghanapāṭhī is given to those who have completed this demanding training.
ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಯುವವರಿಗೆ
- ವೇದಮಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಗುರುಮುಖದಿಂದ ಕೇಳಿ ಕಲಿಯುವುದೇ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಕ್ರಮ. ಬರೆದ ಪಾಠ ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ನೆರವು ಮಾತ್ರ.
The traditional way is to learn a Vedic mantra by hearing it from a teacher. The written text is only an aid to memory. - ಮೊದಲು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಅಕ್ಷರವನ್ನೂ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ. ವೇಗ ತಾನಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
Begin slowly, with every letter clear. Speed comes by itself. - ಸ್ವರಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು ವರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾತ್ರೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಲಿ. ನಂತರ ಸ್ವರವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ.
Get the letters and lengths right before the accents. Then add the accents.
Learn the meaning of the mantra too. The Shiksha itself calls reciting without the meaning a fault. Every hymn page on this site gives the meaning. - ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಅಥವಾ ಗುರುಗಳ ಶಾಖೆಯ ಉಚ್ಚಾರ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗಿಂತ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ.
If the pronunciation of your family or teacher’s branch differs from what is here, follow that.

The mantra of the six limbs is the second anuvaka of the Shikshavalli of the Taittiriya Upanishad. The accented text is from the version on vignanam.org. The explanation of balam, sāma and santāna follows Shankaracharya’s commentary. What is here is a simple summary, not a literal translation.
There are several recensions of the Paniniya Shiksha, and the number and wording of the verses differ a little between them. That is why we have not given verse numbers. The verse on the calls of birds and animals and the three speeds appear only in some recensions. The branch-specific features of pronunciation are set out in the Pratishakhya texts. What is here is only a general introduction.

The six limbs of the Shiksha fit the way any skill is learnt: first the right basic elements, then timing, then measured force, and finally evenness and flow. Speed comes last.
In even recitation at a middle pace, the breath goes out slowly and steadily. Slow breathing of this kind can slightly slow the heart rate and calm the mind. It is not a substitute for treatment.
