ಗೌರವ ಗಳಿಸಿಕೊಡುವ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳು ಎರಡು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ. ಒಂದು ಆಯುಧದ್ದು, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ್ದು.
ಆದರೆ ಎರಡಕ್ಕೂ ಒಂದೇ ಆಯುಸ್ಸು ಅಲ್ಲ. ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವುಗಳ ದಾರಿ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಂ ಚ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಂ ಚ ದ್ವೇ ವಿದ್ಯೇ ಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಯೇ ।
ಆದ್ಯಾ ಹಾಸ್ಯಾಯ ವೃದ್ಧತ್ವೇ ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾದ್ರಿಯತೇ ಸದಾ ॥
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
विद्या शस्त्रं च शास्त्रं च द्वे विद्ये प्रतिपत्तये ।
आद्या हास्याय वृद्धत्वे द्वितीयाद्रियते सदा ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ವಿದ್ಯಾ (विद्या, vidyā) = ವಿದ್ಯೆ (skill, learning)
- ಶಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ (शस्त्रम्, śastram) = ಆಯುಧ, ಆಯುಧ ವಿದ್ಯೆ (the weapon, the art of arms)
- ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
- ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ (शास्त्रम्, śāstram) = ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ಗ್ರಂಥ ವಿದ್ಯೆ (the science, learning from books)
- ದ್ವೇ ವಿದ್ಯೇ (द्वे विद्ये, dve vidye) = ಎರಡು ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳು (two skills)
- ಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಯೇ (प्रतिपत्तये, pratipattaye) = ಗೌರವ ಗಳಿಸಲು (for gaining standing)
- ಆದ್ಯಾ (आद्या, ādyā) = ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು (the first)
- ಹಾಸ್ಯಾಯ (हास्याय, hāsyāya) = ನಗೆಪಾಟಲಿಗೆ (for ridicule)
- ವೃದ್ಧತ್ವೇ (वृद्धत्वे, vṛddhatve) = ಮುಪ್ಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ (in old age)
- ದ್ವಿತೀಯಾ (द्वितीया, dvitīyā) = ಎರಡನೆಯದು (the second)
- ಆದ್ರಿಯತೇ (आद्रियते, ādriyate) = ಗೌರವಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ (is honoured)
- ಸದಾ (सदा, sadā) = ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ (always)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಆಯುಧವಿದ್ಯೆ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿದ್ಯೆ, ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಗೌರವ ಗಳಿಸಿಕೊಡುವ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳು. ಆದರೆ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು ಮುಪ್ಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಗೆಪಾಟಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಎರಡನೆಯದು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಗೌರವಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The art of arms and the study of the sciences, these two skills win a man standing. But the first becomes a matter for laughter in old age, while the second is honoured always.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಶಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಒಂದೇ ಅಕ್ಷರದ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ. ಆ ಸಣ್ಣ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನೇ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇಡೀ ಬದುಕಿನ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತದೆ.
The Sanskrit words shastra, a weapon, and shaastra, a science, differ by a single vowel. The verse grows that small difference into a difference that lasts a whole life.
ಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುವ ಸ್ಥಾನ, ಮನ್ನಣೆ. ಎರಡೂ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳು ಮನ್ನಣೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಪ್ಪುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಆಯುಧವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ಅದರ ಆಯುಸ್ಸನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.
Pratipatti means standing or recognition in society. The verse grants that both skills bring recognition. It is not dismissing the art of arms, only reminding us how long it lasts.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ದೇಹಬಲವನ್ನೇ ನೆಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡ ವೃತ್ತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾಲಮಿತಿ ಇದೆ. ಕ್ರೀಡಾಪಟುಗಳು, ನೃತ್ಯಗಾರರು, ದೈಹಿಕ ಶ್ರಮದ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಮುಂದೆ ಏನು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ಬೇಗ ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Work that rests on the strength of the body has a time limit. Athletes, dancers and those in physically demanding trades meet the question of what next rather early.
ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ದೇಹಬಲದ ಕೆಲಸದ ಜೊತೆಗೇ ಓದು, ಕಲಿಕೆ, ಕಲಿಸುವಿಕೆ ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದನ್ನಾದರೂ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತಿಕೆ. ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದೂ ಅದನ್ನೇ.
So it is wise to grow at least one of reading, learning or teaching alongside work that depends on the body. That is what the verse is saying too.
