ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಕವಿಗಳು ಹೊಗಳುವಷ್ಟೇ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಚುಚ್ಚುವುದನ್ನೂ ಬಲ್ಲರು.

ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದೇ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿ ಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ನಾಯಿಯ ಬಾಲ.

ಶುನಃ ಪುಚ್ಛಮಿವ ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಜೀವಿತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಯಾ ವಿನಾ ।
ನ ಗುಹ್ಯಗೋಪನೇ ಶಕ್ತಂ ನ ಚ ದಂಶನಿವಾರಣೇ ॥

शुनः पुच्छमिव व्यर्थं जीवितं विद्यया विना ।
न गुह्यगोपने शक्तं न च दंशनिवारणे ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (English IAST)

na guhyagopane śaktaṃ na ca daṃśanivāraṇe ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಶುನಃ (शुनः, śunaḥ) = ನಾಯಿಯ (of a dog)
ಪುಚ್ಛಮ್ ಇವ (पुच्छम् इव, puccham iva) = ಬಾಲದಂತೆ (like the tail)
ವ್ಯರ್ಥಮ್ (व्यर्थम्, vyartham) = ವ್ಯರ್ಥ, ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲದ್ದು (useless)
ಜೀವಿತಮ್ (जीवितम्, jīvitam) = ಬದುಕು (life)
ವಿದ್ಯಯಾ ವಿನಾ (विद्यया विना, vidyayā vinā) = ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ (without learning)
ನ ಗುಹ್ಯಗೋಪನೇ ಶಕ್ತಮ್ (न गुह्यगोपने शक्तम्, na guhyagopane śaktam) = ಮುಚ್ಚಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಲು ಸಮರ್ಥವಲ್ಲ (not able to cover what should be covered)
ನ ಚ ದಂಶನಿವಾರಣೇ (न च दंशनिवारणे, na ca daṃśanivāraṇe) = ಕಚ್ಚುವ ನೊಣಗಳನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಲೂ ಅಲ್ಲ (nor to drive off the biting flies)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಬದುಕು ನಾಯಿಯ ಬಾಲದಂತೆ ವ್ಯರ್ಥ. ಆ ಬಾಲ ಮುಚ್ಚಬೇಕಾದ್ದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಕಚ್ಚುವ ನೊಣಗಳನ್ನೂ ಓಡಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

A life without learning is as useless as a dog’s tail, which neither covers what ought to be covered nor drives away the biting flies.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ದಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ ಕಚ್ಚುವುದು, ಕಚ್ಚುವ ಕೀಟ. ದನಕರುಗಳ ಬಾಲ ನೊಣಗಳನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ನಾಯಿಯ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಬಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅದೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಗಮನಿಸಿದ ವಿವರ.

Damsha means a bite or a biting insect. The tail of cattle drives flies away, but a dog’s short tail cannot even do that. The verse has noticed this detail closely.

ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಯಿತೆಂದರೆ ನಾಯಿಯ ಬಾಲ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟಾಯಿತು.

The comparison became so well known in Sanskrit that a dog’s tail turned into a stock phrase for anything useless.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಇಂಥ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇರೆಯವರನ್ನು ಅಳೆಯಲು ಬಳಸಬಾರದು. ಓದಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗದವರು ಬಹಳ ಮಂದಿ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ, ಅದು ಅವರ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ.

Such lines should not be used to measure other people. Many were never given the chance to study, and that is not their fault.

ಆದರೆ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನು ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಇದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷ ನಾನು ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಏನನ್ನು ಕಲಿತೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರವಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚುಚ್ಚು ನಮಗೇ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.

But it is a good question to ask oneself. If there is no answer to what I learnt new this year, the sting of the verse is meant for us.
