ಅಂತಃಸಾರವಿಹೀನಸ್ಯ: ಮಲಯದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಬಿದಿರು ಬಿದಿರೇ

ಮಲಯ ಪರ್ವತ ಶ್ರೀಗಂಧದ ನಾಡು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಮರಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಗಂಧದ ವಾಸನೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಕಾವ್ಯದ ನಂಬಿಕೆ.

ಆದರೆ ಬಿದಿರು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಿದಿರಾಗಿಯೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಏಕೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದೇ ಪದದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಅನ್ತಃಸಾರವಿಹೀನಸ್ಯ ಸಹಾಯಃ ಕಿಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ ।
ಮಲಯೇಽಪಿ ಸ್ಥಿತೋ ವೇಣುರ್ವೇಣುರೇವ ನ ಚನ್ದನಃ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

अन्तःसारविहीनस्य सहायः किं करिष्यति ।
मलयेऽपि स्थितो वेणुर्वेणुरेव न चन्दनः ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

antaḥsāravihīnasya sahāyaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati |
malaye’pi sthito veṇurveṇureva na candanaḥ ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಅನ್ತಃಸಾರವಿಹೀನಸ್ಯ (अन्तःसारविहीनस्य, antaḥsāravihīnasya) = ಒಳಗೆ ಸಾರವಿಲ್ಲದವನಿಗೆ (for one who has no substance within)
ಸಹಾಯಃ ಕಿಮ್ ಕರಿಷ್ಯತಿ (सहायः किम् करिष्यति, sahāyaḥ kim kariṣyati) = ಸಹಾಯ ಏನು ಮಾಡೀತು (what will help do)
ಮಲಯೇ ಅಪಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ (मलये अपि स्थितः, malaye api sthitaḥ) = ಮಲಯ ಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದರೂ (though it stands on the Malaya hill)
ವೇಣುಃ (वेणुः, veṇuḥ) = ಬಿದಿರು (the bamboo)
ವೇಣುಃ ಏವ (वेणुः एव, veṇuḥ eva) = ಬಿದಿರೇ (remains bamboo)
ನ ಚನ್ದನಃ (न चन्दनः, na candanaḥ) = ಗಂಧವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (and does not become sandal)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಒಳಗೆ ಸಾರವಿಲ್ಲದವನಿಗೆ ಹೊರಗಿನ ಸಹಾಯ ಏನು ಮಾಡೀತು? ಗಂಧದ ನಾಡಾದ ಮಲಯ ಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದರೂ ಬಿದಿರು ಬಿದಿರೇ, ಅದು ಗಂಧವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

What will outside help do for one who has no substance within? Though it stands on the Malaya hill, the home of sandal, bamboo remains bamboo and does not turn to sandalwood.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಅಂತಃಸಾರ ಎಂದರೆ ಒಳಗಿನ ತಿರುಳು. ಬಿದಿರಿನ ಒಳಗೆ ಟೊಳ್ಳು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದರೆ ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಬಿಗಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Antahsara means the pith within. The comparison tightens when one remembers that bamboo is hollow inside.

ಸಹಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಹಾಯ ಒಳಗಿನದ್ದನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಬಲ್ಲದು, ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಲಾರದು ಎಂಬುದಷ್ಟೇ ಅದರ ಮಾತು.

The verse is not dismissing help. Its point is only that help can grow what is there and cannot create what is not.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಶಾಲೆ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುರು, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ಬಹಳ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಕಲಿಯುವ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಅವು ಮಾಡಲಾರವು.

A good school, a good teacher and a good institution help a great deal. But they cannot do the work of learning.

ಇದನ್ನು ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಕೈಬಿಡುವ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದು. ಬಿದಿರಿಗೂ ಅದರದೇ ಕೆಲಸವಿದೆ, ಕೊಳಲಾಗುವುದು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಾಧ್ಯ.

This should not be taken as a reason to give up on anyone. Bamboo has work of its own, and only bamboo can become a flute.
