ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಸುಭಾಷಿತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾದವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೂ ಒಂದು.

ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಮಾತು ಕಠಿಣ. ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಓದಿಸದ ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅದು ಶತ್ರು ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಮಾತಾ ಶತ್ರುಃ ಪಿತಾ ವೈರೀ ಯೇನ ಬಾಲೋ ನ ಪಾಠಿತಃ ।
ನ ಶೋಭತೇ ಸಭಾಮಧ್ಯೇ ಹಂಸಮಧ್ಯೇ ಬಕೋ ಯಥಾ ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)

माता शत्रुः पिता वैरी येन बालो न पाठितः ।
न शोभते सभामध्ये हंसमध्ये बको यथा ॥

ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (IAST)

mātā śatruḥ pitā vairī yena bālo na pāṭhitaḥ |
na śobhate sabhāmadhye haṃsamadhye bako yathā ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಮಾತಾ ಶತ್ರುಃ (माता शत्रुः, mātā śatruḥ) = ತಾಯಿ ಶತ್ರು (the mother is an enemy)
ಪಿತಾ ವೈರೀ (पिता वैरी, pitā vairī) = ತಂದೆ ವೈರಿ (the father a foe)
ಯೇನ ಬಾಲಃ ನ ಪಾಠಿತಃ (येन बालः न पाठितः, yena bālaḥ na pāṭhitaḥ) = ಯಾರಿಂದ ಮಗು ಓದಿಸಲ್ಪಡಲಿಲ್ಲವೋ (by whom the child was not taught)
ನ ಶೋಭತೇ ಸಭಾಮಧ್ಯೇ (न शोभते सभामध्ये, na śobhate sabhāmadhye) = ಸಭೆಯ ನಡುವೆ ಶೋಭಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (he does not shine in an assembly)
ಹಂಸಮಧ್ಯೇ ಬಕಃ ಯಥಾ (हंसमध्ये बकः यथा, haṃsamadhye bakaḥ yathā) = ಹಂಸಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಬಕ ಹೇಗೋ ಹಾಗೆ (as a heron among swans)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಯಾರು ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಓದಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಆ ತಾಯಿ ಶತ್ರು, ಆ ತಂದೆ ವೈರಿ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಆ ಮಗು ಸಭೆಯ ನಡುವೆ ಶೋಭಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಹಂಸಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಬಂದ ಬಕದಂತೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The mother is an enemy and the father a foe who did not have their child taught. For such a one does not shine in an assembly, like a heron among swans.

ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಭಾಷಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಶಾಲೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

The verse is also found in the Chanakya niti and is quoted again and again in Kannada speeches and at school functions.

ಬಕ ಎಂದರೆ ಕೊಕ್ಕರೆ. ಹಂಸ ಮತ್ತು ಬಕ ಎರಡೂ ಬಿಳಿಯ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು, ದೂರದಿಂದ ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ. ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹೋದಾಗಲೇ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುವುದು ಈ ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯ ಚಂದ.

Baka is the heron. Swan and heron are both white birds and look alike from a distance. The difference shows only on coming near, and that is the charm of the comparison.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

ಇದನ್ನು ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸಲು ಬಳಸಬಾರದು. ಬಡತನ, ಕಾಯಿಲೆ, ಶಾಲೆಯ ದೂರ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಅವರ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳು.

This should not be used to blame parents. Poverty, illness and the distance to a school are not in their hands.

ಆದರೆ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿರುವಷ್ಟನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದು ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ, ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಉತ್ತರ, ದಿನದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಮಯ. ಇವು ಹಣ ಕೇಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

But doing what is in one’s hands is possible for everyone: a habit of reading at home, an answer when a question is asked, a little time each day. These cost nothing.
