Namaḥ śivāya is the five-syllable mantra of Shiva. The five verses of this hymn begin in turn with the syllables na, ma, śi, va and ya. Each verse closes with a line such as “tasmai nakārāya namaḥ śivāya”, saluting Shiva as that very syllable.

To the great lord who wears the king of serpents as a garland, who has three eyes, whose body paint is sacred ash. To him who is eternal and pure, clad only in the directions, to that Shiva who is the syllable “na”, salutation.
To him who is anointed with the waters of the Mandakini, the heavenly Ganga, and with sandal paste, the great lord and master of Nandishvara and of the pramathas, Shiva’s attendant hosts. To him who is well worshipped with many flowers, the mandara first among them, to that Shiva who is the syllable “ma”, salutation.
To the auspicious one, the sun that makes the lotus of Gauri’s face bloom, the destroyer of Daksha’s sacrifice. To the glorious blue-throated one, who drank the poison that rose from the churning of the ocean, whose banner bears the bull, to that Shiva who is the syllable “śi”, salutation.
To him whose head is worshipped by Vasishtha, by Agastya who was born from a pot, by Gautama and other noble sages and by the gods (or, who is the crest jewel they worship). To him whose eyes are the moon, the sun and fire, to that Shiva who is the syllable “va”, salutation.
To the eternal one who took the form of a yaksha, who wears matted locks and holds the Pinaka bow in his hand. To him who is divine, the god, clad only in the directions, to that Shiva who is the syllable “ya”, salutation. Many recall here the story in the Kena Upanishad, where the Supreme appears as a yaksha to humble the pride of the gods.

ಈ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this hymn

Tradition holds that this hymn was composed by Shankaracharya. As with many hymns that bear his name, there is no firm evidence to settle the authorship. It is nonetheless among the best loved Shiva hymns in South India.

The charm of the hymn lies in its arrangement of syllables. The first word of each verse begins with one syllable of the mantra namaḥ śivāya: nāgendra, mandākinī, śivāya, vasiṣṭha, yakṣa. Many verses also repeat words beginning with the same sound, as mandākinī, maheśvara, mandāra and mukhya do in the second verse.

Most lines are in the eleven-syllable upajati metre. Only the first three lines of the second verse are in the fourteen-syllable vasantatilaka, which is why they sound longer when sung. Some editions add a closing phalashruti verse, which our source text does not have.

We follow the stotranidhi text. In the third verse we print “vṛnda” where our source has “bṛnda”, and both spellings are found in print. In the third and fourth verses a single compound runs across two lines, “gaurīvadanābjavṛndasūryāya” and “gautamāryamunīndradevārcitaśekharāya”, and we break it where the line breaks.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ಆವೃತ್ತಿಗಳು ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. · Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

The whole hymn is built around five syllables. Even on days with no time for a long prayer, a short mantra can stay with the mind. Many have found that five syllables said slowly a few times, while waiting for a bus or in the minute before walking into an exam hall, bring the breath and the mind into one rhythm.
