Context and commentary on verse 1.5
Tasya palayatah, in the genitive, means even as he was protecting. It can also be taken as the genitive of disregard (anadara), which carries the sense in spite of. Read so, the enemies rose in disregard of his good rule.
An aurasa son is a son of one’s own body, born of one’s lawful wife. The Dharmashastra names several kinds of sons, and the aurasa ranks first. Tradition holds that seeing one’s subjects as such sons is the mark of an ideal king.
The word kolavidhvamsinah has two readings. In the first, it is the name of a group or clan of hostile kings, the kings called the Kolavidhvamsins, and many read it so. In the second, the word is analysed as those who destroyed Kola, or Kolapuri, a city. Some take that city to have been in Suratha’s kingdom. Identifying it with any present-day town is uncertain.
In the full meaning we have given the first reading and kept the word as a name. Under either reading the story moves the same way: even good rule did not keep enemies from rising.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Many of those waiting in a hospital corridor are quietly asking themselves: but we did everything right.
This verse does not try to answer that. It simply admits that trouble comes even to one who has acted rightly. Knowing that hardship and fault are not always linked can lighten the weight of blaming ourselves.
