Five verses, five jewels. Each one ends with namostu ramaya salakshmanaya, salutations to Rama together with Lakshmana, so that throughout the hymn the two brothers are honoured side by side.
The verses draw Rama’s form and character in a few strokes: eyes long as lotus petals, a body like a cloud lit by lightning, the arrow that humbled the pride of the ocean, the friendship with Sugriva, and the compassion that makes him father and mother to his devotees. A closing phalashruti verse speaks of those who recite the hymn at the three junctures of the day.

His eyes are long as the petals of a lotus, and bright earrings adorn his ears. He is the abode of compassion and born in a noble line. Salutations to that Rama, who is with Lakshmana.
His beautiful body shines like a cloud lit by lightning, and the vidyadharas praise his good qualities. He came down as a hero and he strikes down those who stand against him. Salutations to that Rama, who is with Lakshmana.
He keeps the divine weapons and his bow always at hand, and his was the arrow that broke the pride of the ocean. He became the friend of Sugriva and killed the enemies of the gods. Salutations to that Rama, who is with Lakshmana.
His waist is adorned with a yellow silk garment, and Brahma, Indra and the immortals bow to him. To the people who are his own devotees he is both father and mother. Salutations to that Rama, who is with Lakshmana.
Salutations, salutations to you who are worshipped by all. Salutations, salutations to you whose face is like the moon. Salutations, salutations to you born in the line of Raghu. Salutations to that Rama, who is with Lakshmana.
The man who recites these five jewels at the three junctures of the day is freed from all his sins and reaches the highest goal.
About this hymn
The colophon of our source takes these five verses from the Shrirama Karnamrita, a large anthology of devotional verses on Rama. Many printed collections of hymns, on the other hand, give the piece as a work of Shankaracharya. That second claim has no strong manuscript support, so we leave the question of authorship open.
The structure is simple. The five verses are in upajati and the closing phalashruti is in anushtubh. As the title’s word pancharatna, five jewels, suggests, each of the five begins with a different letter: ka, vi, sam, pi and na. In the source the phalashruti continues the same numbering as verse 6, and we have kept that.
The closing line of every verse is namostu ramaya salakshmanaya. We translate it in full in verse 1 and briefly thereafter. Praising Rama never alone but always with Lakshmana is the mark of this hymn. Verse 4 calls Rama father and mother to his devotees, a phrase that recurs throughout the literature of Rama devotion.
We print the Stotranidhi text without change. Other collections show small differences of wording and divide the compounds in other ways. In verse 3 we take samudragarvapaharayudha as the weapon that took away the pride of the ocean, which commentators refer to the episode where Rama raised his bow against the sea for the sake of the causeway.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Two brothers sharing one desk to study have little room but much company. This hymn, too, names Lakshmana every time it bows to Rama. It is a reminder that behind any large piece of work there is also the share of those who stood alongside.
