When all the worlds have sunk into the waters of dissolution, a small child lies in the cup of a single banyan leaf with his foot in his mouth. The ashtaka opens with that vision, the one seen by the sage Markandeya. All eight verses close with the same line, balam mukundam manasa smarami, I remember in my mind the child Mukunda.

From the cosmic picture of the first two verses the hymn comes down to a courtyard in Gokula: the butter eaten and the pretended sleep, the dance on Kaliya’s hood, the mortar dragged between two arjuna trees, and at the end the child at his mother’s breast, looking up at her face. Being an easy hymn, it has a settled place among the daily verses children are taught by heart.

With his lotus hand he takes his lotus foot and puts it into his lotus mouth. Lying in the cup of a banyan leaf, that child Mukunda is the one I remember in my mind.
Having withdrawn the worlds into himself, he lies in the middle of a banyan leaf, his form without beginning or end. Lord of all, come down for the good of all, that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
His tender body is dark as a blue water lily, and his lotus feet are worshipped by Indra and the other gods. To those who take refuge in him he is the santanaka, the wish-granting tree of heaven, and that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
Hanging curls, a long necklace swinging down, a row of little teeth showing in a mischievous smile, lips red as the bimba fruit, and lovely wide eyes. That child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
The mistress of the cowherd village has put the milk and curds in the hanging sling and gone out for the day. He has eaten his fill in the meantime and lies there feigning sleep, and that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
Kaliya lived within the Yamuna, the daughter of Kalinda, and Krishna loved to make a dance floor of the tips of that serpent’s hoods. Holding its tail in his hand, his face like the autumn moon, that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
Tied to the mortar and yet of great valour, he brought down two tall arjuna trees as though in play. His beautiful eyes are long as a full blown lotus, and that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.
Looking up at his mother’s face with love, the lotus eyed one drinks her milk. He is being and awareness itself, the god of endless forms, and that child Mukunda I remember in my mind.

About this hymn

The hymn carries no author’s name at its close, and most collections print it as anonymous. Some attach the name of Bilvamangala and others that of Shankaracharya. Neither ascription has firm support, so we leave the authorship open.

The first two verses are the scene of dissolution, resting on the story that the sage Markandeya saw the supreme being, who had withdrawn all the worlds into himself, lying as a child on a banyan leaf. The later verses are the childhood deeds told in the Bhagavata: verse 5 the butter eaten and the feigned sleep while Yashoda is out, verse 6 the dance on Kaliya’s hood, verse 7 the mortar and the two arjuna trees, and verse 8 the child at his mother’s breast.

The eight verses are in upajati, that is a mixture of indravajra and upendravajra lines. Since the closing line is the same in every verse, we translate it in full in verse 1 and briefly thereafter.

We print the Stotranidhi text without change. Other editions show small differences of wording, and some printings divide the compounds differently. In verse 3 we take santanakalpadruma as the santanaka, one of the wish granting trees of heaven, while some readers take it simply as a wish granting tree.

· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

For life today

In the jostling of a crowded bus a child still sleeps easily in a parent’s arms. The trust that the holding hand will not let go is enough for it. The picture of the child asleep in the cup of a leaf above the waters of dissolution speaks of that same ease.
