Nee Mayeyolago is among the best known of Kanaka Dasa’s songs. It is a song of reflection, yet it does not use a single word of doctrine. It goes on asking questions using only everyday things: a house, open ground, the eye, sugar, the tongue, a flower, a scent.
The song has a pallavi of two lines and three charanas. Every line asks a pair of questions, and the two cannot be answered apart from each other. Each charana comes to rest on the same words, that both of them are within you, Hari.

Hari, are you within maya, or is maya within you. Are you within the body, or is the body within you. The way of asking carries its own answer, that maya and the body alike depend on you, while you are held within nothing.
Is the house within the open ground, or the open ground within the house. Are both the open ground and the house within the eye. Is the eye within the understanding, or the understanding within the eye. Hari, both the eye and the understanding are within you.
Is sweetness within sugar, or sugar within sweetness. Are both of them within the tongue. Is the tongue within the mind, or the mind within the tongue. Hari, both the tongue and the mind are within you.
Is the scent within the flower, or the flower within the scent. Are both of them within the power of smell. You who have no equal, Adikeshavaraya of Kaginele, it is not within my power to utter this, for everything rests within you, Hari.
About this hymn
Kanaka Dasa (about 1509 to 1609) is one of the great names of the Haridasa tradition, and tradition holds that he was a disciple of Vyasaraya. His signature name is Kaginele Adikeshava, Kaginele being a place in present-day Haveri district. This is the best known of his philosophical songs, and it is taught as a lesson in Kannada schools.
The design of the song is simple. Every line asks a pair of questions, and neither member of the pair stands without the other. Sweetness cannot be shown apart from sugar, nor scent apart from the flower. The pairs are then gathered into the senses, the eye, the tongue and the nose, the senses into the understanding and the mind, and at the end all of it into Hari.
The Madhva tradition reads it as a song about dependence. Things, the senses and the mind cannot stand by themselves, for their being and their working alike rest on Hari. He is not one item among them but the one who holds them all. The last line says just this, that the singer has not the power to finish saying it, and that everything rests within him.
On the text: we follow kn.wikisource.org. There the interrogative ending is printed sometimes as olago with a long final vowel and sometimes short, and we have written it the same way throughout. Printed collections also disagree about the raga. Shivaranjani and Madhyamavati are the ragas heard most often in concert, and we therefore do not assign it one raga.
· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
Sitting at night in a lighted room and looking towards the window, one sees the same room out in the darkness. Ask whether the room is inside the window or the window inside the room, and the answer is not easy. The questions this song asks are of that kind.
For most of the day we go about as though everything were in our own hands. That the eye sees, that the tongue knows taste, that the mind holds a memory, these are not our achievements, and the song reminds us of it without argument. Many feel that accepting so much makes the weight of a day a little lighter.
