Nambi Kettavarillavo is one of Purandara Dasa’s songs that states its reassurance plainly. Its whole burden is that no one who trusted Hari has ever come to ruin. The point is made not by argument but through three well known stories.

The song has a pallavi, an anupallavi and three charanas. The three charanas tell, in order, the stories of Dhruva, Prahlada and Gajendra. A few older Kannada forms appear in it, and we explain them in present-day Kannada in the meaning of each stanza.

No one who trusted Rangayya, that is Hari, has ever come to ruin. If some refuse to trust him and are ruined, then let them be, for what can be done about it.
No one has come to ruin who trusted him from whose navel the lotus rose, the lord of all the worlds, the immeasurable one, the first being.
When the boy Dhruva was sitting fondly on his father’s lap, Suruchi, who had lost her sense, pushed him away. Afterwards Hari in his love gave that same Dhruva a lasting throne of his own. No one has come to ruin who trusted that Murari, the enemy of Mura.
When the good Prahlada was being tormented by his own father, the boy called out that Hari alone was his refuge. Hari with great love protected the child and tore apart the cruel Hiranyakashipu. No one has come to ruin who trusted that lord.
Who but Hari has ever saved the elephant king Gajendra and comforted him with the words, do not be afraid. Trust firmly in the lotus feet of Purandara Vitthala, who comes riding on Garuda.

About this hymn

Purandara Dasa (about 1484 to 1564) is a central figure of the Haridasa tradition, and tradition honours him as the father of Carnatic music. His signature name, Purandara Vitthala, appears here in the last charana. The song holds to the Madhva position that all things depend on Hari and that he does not abandon those who take refuge in him.

The three stories of the charanas come from the Bhagavata. Dhruva is in the fourth book, where Suruchi, queen of Uttanapada, pushes Suniti’s son Dhruva from his father’s lap, and Dhruva goes on to win an unshakeable place of his own. Prahlada is in the seventh book and Gajendra in the eighth. In each of the three the one who cried out had no other help left, which is why the song chooses them.

On the text: this song circulates in several recensions that differ a good deal. We print the reading of a Dasara padagalu collection (madhwafestivals.com), in which the anupallavi begins ambujanabhana akhila lokeshana and the charanas are on Dhruva, Prahlada and Gajendra. Other recensions carry an anupallavi beginning ambujanabhana padava neneye bhavambudhi duhkhava pariharisuva krishna, and charanas on Bali and Vibhishana, or on the Pandavas and Draupadi. Singers may of course keep to whichever version they learnt.

The sources do not agree on the raga. Printed collections give Purvikalyani or Kalyani, while in concerts musicians sing it in other ragas as well. We therefore do not assign it one raga.

For life today

Every household knows the moment when a child learning to ride first lifts one hand from the handlebar. Before letting go there has to be a trust that someone is there behind. The trust this song speaks of is of that kind, a courage that lets go of the support one can see. It does not mean that in hard times we should let go of everything we hold, but there is a quiet relief in it, that we need not hold every last thing ourselves.
