Kallu Sakkare Kolliro is among the most often sung of Purandara Dasa’s songs. It calls the name of Krishna a piece of rock candy, and invites everyone to buy it in the very voice of a market trader. The image is a simple one, yet every line of the song carries it a step further.

The song has a pallavi, an anupallavi and three charanas. The words of the charanas come from the old language of trade: pack loads, gunny sacks, tolls, cash. Since they are no longer in common use, we explain them in present-day Kannada in the meaning of each stanza.

Buy rock candy, all of you, buy rock candy. The poet calls out in the voice of a trader crying his wares at the market, and the ware he is selling is the name of Hari.
Only those who have tasted this rock candy know its sweetness. It is the rock candy that is the name of Krishna, the lotus-eyed one, whose eyes are like a blossomed flower.
It need not be loaded on bullocks and carried about to be sold, nor pressed down and packed into gunny sacks. Wherever you take it there is no cartage to pay and no toll on the road. This is fine merchandise, and it brings great profit.
It brings no loss and it never spoils and turns foul. However much of it you carry away, no price is set on it and no cash is paid for it. Black ants may eat at it and it grows no less, and it is a ware well known through the whole town.
For this there is no trudging from market to market, and it is not a ware to be spread out in a market and sold. It is the sweetness that the tongues of devotees taste at all times. Buy the rock candy that is the name of the beloved lord Purandara Vitthala.

About this hymn

Purandara Dasa (about 1484 to 1564) is a central figure of the Haridasa tradition, and tradition honours him as the father of Carnatic music. His signature name, Purandara Vitthala, appears in the last line of this song. Tradition says he was a dealer in gold and gems before he took to singing, and many connect the trading language of this song with that account.

The song keeps to one image and builds it up entirely out of market words. The rock candy needs no bullock to carry it, no sack to hold it and no toll to be paid on it, and ants may eat at it without diminishing it. The sense of it all is that the name of Hari is a ware without weight, without price and without end. The last charana adds where its sweetness is tasted, namely on the tongues of devotees.

On the text: we print the reading of the Kannada songbook collections (kannadanudi.com) and have collated it with kn.wikisource.org. That source gives only the pallavi, the anupallavi and the first and third charanas, and lacks the second. It also reads pullalochana, where we print phullalochana, from phulla, blossomed, that is, one whose eyes are like an open lotus. All three charanas are printed here in full.

No single raga is fixed for the song. It is heard most often in Kalyani and in Sindhubhairavi, and bhajan groups also sing it to simpler tunes of their own. We therefore do not assign it one raga.

· Sources: several. Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.

For life today

Stirring sugar into the evening coffee is one of the small tasks of a household. Once it has dissolved there is nothing to see, but the one who drinks it knows. The sweetness this song speaks of is like that, not something that can be shown, only something known to those who have tasted it. A name that comes to the lips between the small tasks of a day, or a single line of a song, can be a sweetness of that kind.
