Dhanteras

The thirteenth of the dark fortnight before Deepavali: the evening of the lamp for Yama, of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari, and of buying metal or gold.

Dhanteras, Dhanatrayodashi in Sanskrit and in Kannada, is the thirteenth tithi of the dark fortnight that ends in the Deepavali amavasya. In the North’s purnimanta reckoning this is Kartika krishna trayodashi; in the amanta calendar of Karnataka it is Ashwayuja krishna trayodashi, and the day is the same in both. In North and West India it is the first of the Deepavali days. It is also kept as the jayanti of Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods.

The lamp for Yama

The rite that belongs to this evening alone is Yama deepa, the lamp for Yama. While the Trayodashi is running in the evening, a lamp is set outside the door facing south, the direction of Yama, so that untimely death keeps away from the house. It is the one night of the year on which this is done.

The story told for it is of a young prince whose fate was to die of a snakebite on the fourth night of his marriage. His wife would not let him sleep that night. She heaped her ornaments and many lamps at the door of the room and kept him awake with songs and stories, and when Yama came in the form of a snake he was dazzled by the light and the gold and went away.

Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari

Lakshmi is worshipped in the evening with lamps, and with her Kubera, the keeper of the gods’ wealth. In many homes the worship is also offered to Dhanvantari, who is said to have risen from the churning of the ocean on this day, holding the pot of amrita. For that reason the day is kept as Dhanvantari Jayanti, and it is a day of particular observance for practitioners of Ayurveda.

Buying something of metal is the custom most people know: a vessel for the kitchen, a little silver or gold. In Maharashtra dried coriander seed lightly pounded with jaggery is offered as naivedya, and in villages farmers decorate and worship their cattle.

In Karnataka

In Karnataka this trayodashi is kept in many homes as the day before Naraka Chaturdashi on which water is filled for the oil bath, called Jalapoorna Trayodashi or neeru tumbuva habba. The large vessel in which the bath water is heated is cleaned, decorated with lime and kumkuma, and garlanded at its neck with mango leaves and a piece of turmeric. It is filled with water and Ganga is worshipped in it, so that the water for the next morning’s bath is held to be Ganga water.

Which day Anudina gives

Because both the Yama lamp and the Lakshmi worship belong to the evening, Anudina gives Dhanteras on the day on which the Trayodashi of this dark fortnight is running at pradosha, the time just after sunset. That makes it, every year, a Pradosha day as well. In 2026 it falls on 6 November, and in 2027 on 27 October. Dhanteras is shown in every regional setting.

The Deepavali days

Dhanteras is followed by Naraka Chaturdashi, with its bath before dawn; the Lakshmi Puja of the amavasya; Bali Padyami, which is the first day of Kartika in Karnataka; and Bhai Dooj.
