Karkidaka Vavu is the new moon, the vavu, of Karkidakam, the Malayalam month in which the Sun is in Karka, from the middle of July to the middle of August. It is the day Kerala sets apart for its departed. From the small hours, the river banks, temple tanks and beaches of the state fill with people offering bali tharpanam for their parents and ancestors, and schools and government offices are closed for it.
The month and the day
Karkidakam is the last month of the Malayalam year and a month of the monsoon, set apart in temples and homes for the reading of the Ramayana. Its new moon is the one given to the dead. The explanation offered is the familiar one of different measures of time: a month of human time is a single day for the departed, so that the rite of the new moon reaches them once in each of their days, and on Karkidaka Vavu they are believed to visit their homes.
How the bali is offered
The rite is done by men and women alike, of every age and community. Many keep orikkal the day before, a single meal, taking nothing at night. On the morning of the vavu they bathe and, still in wet clothes, sit before a cut plantain leaf on which rice is shaped into small balls by hand and set out with sesame, sandal paste and flowers. A ring of darbha grass is worn on the right hand, and a priest usually guides the words. The offering is then carried to the water, river or sea, and given to it. Sesame and water are the two things the rite cannot do without. At home a sweet called vavada, of rice, jaggery, coconut, cardamom, dry ginger and green gram, is made for the departed who are believed to come.
The best-known places for the bali are the sands of Aluva Manappuram on the Periyar, by the Shiva temple; Thirunelli in Wayanad, at the Papanasini stream; the Parasurama temple at Thiruvallam near Thiruvananthapuram; the Papanasam beach at Varkala; and the Navamukunda temple at Thirunavaya on the Bharathapuzha. Temple tanks and river ghats across the state serve those who cannot travel, and the rite may also be done privately at home.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which the amavasya is running in the aparahna, the afternoon portion of the day, while the Sun is in Karka. The afternoon is the time given for rites to the departed, and Anudina uses the same rule for Mahalaya Amavasya. Should the amavasya hold the afternoon on two days, the first is taken. The day is shown to readers who keep the South Indian custom, as a Kerala row, and to any reader who has chosen to see the festivals of other regions. The next date Anudina gives is 2 August 2027.
Once in a while Karkidakam holds two new moons, as it did in 2023. Anudina then shows both. Kerala in practice takes the first: in 2023 the bali was offered on the first day of Karkidakam, and the second new moon of the month, in August, was not the one people went to the river for.
The same new moon elsewhere
Tamil Nadu keeps the same new moon, in the same solar month under the name Aadi, as Aadi Amavasai, and for the same purpose. In most years it is also the new moon that closes Ashadha in the amanta lunar calendar, the day Karnataka keeps as Bhimana Amavasya. For the new moon in general, see Amavasya.
