Aadi Amavasai is the new moon of Aadi, the Tamil month in which the Sun is in Karka, from the middle of July to the middle of August. It is the principal day in the Tamil year for tharpanam, the offering of sesame and water to the departed. By Tamil custom the new moons of three months are held to be especially suited to rites for the ancestors, those of Aadi, Thai and Purattasi, and on Aadi Amavasai the seashores and river ghats of Tamil Nadu are crowded from before dawn.
What is done
The rite is pitru tharpanam: sesame and water offered with the names of the departed, and pindas, balls of cooked rice, set out for them. The family then bathes in the sea or the river. Many add dana to the day. At Tiruchendur, on the shore beside the Subrahmanya temple, annadanam is arranged, clothes are given to those in need, agathi greens to cows and grain to birds.
Where it is done
The places are by the water. At Rameswaram pilgrims gather at dawn on the Agni Theertham beach, and many then bathe in the twenty-two theerthams within the Ramanathaswamy temple; they come from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka as well as from Tamil Nadu. At Kanyakumari the rite is done at the Triveni Sangamam, the meeting of the three seas, from four in the morning, and people come there from Kerala too. In Chennai the crowds go to the Marina beach and to the tank of the Kapaleeswarar temple at Mylapore. In Tirunelveli district they go to the ghats on the Thamirabarani, at Papanasam and at Kurukkuthurai, and across the delta to the banks of the Kaveri.
Which day Anudina gives
Anudina gives the day on which the amavasya is running in the aparahna, the afternoon portion of the day, while the Sun is in Karka. The afternoon is the time given for rites to the departed, and Anudina uses the same rule for Mahalaya Amavasya. Should the amavasya hold the afternoon on two days, the first is taken. The day is shown to readers who keep the South Indian custom, as a Tamil row, and to any reader who has chosen to see the festivals of other regions. The next date Anudina gives is 2 August 2027.
Aadi and the Malayalam Karkidakam are the same solar month under two names, so this is the same day as Kerala’s Karkidaka Vavu, and a reader who keeps the South Indian custom will see both rows on it. In most years it is also the new moon that closes Ashadha in the amanta lunar calendar used in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Other days of Aadi
Aadi holds two more days in Anudina: Aadi Perukku, the eighteenth of the month, when the rivers are thanked, and Thiruvadipooram, the day of Andal’s nakshatra. Now and then Aadi Amavasai and Aadi Perukku fall on the same day, as they did in 2016. Of the other two new moons named above, the Purattasi one is usually Mahalaya Amavasya, which closes the fortnight of the ancestors. For the new moon in general, see Amavasya.
