This is an ashtaka in praise of Shiva at the Malahanikareshvara temple on the bank of the Tunga near Sringeri. The word mala in the name means impurity here, so the name carries the sense of the Lord who removes impurity.

After the first six verses, verses seven and eight speak of the nature of Shiva beyond the qualities and of the knowledge of the oneness of the individual and Brahman. This page gives the text in Kannada, Devanagari and Roman transliteration, and the meaning of each verse.

About this hymn

The ashtaka praises Shiva as Malahanikareshvara. Verses 2 and 8 recall the sage Vibhandaka, and verse 2 also the sage Rishyashringa. Verses 4 and 5 speak of installations made at the temple by gurus of Sringeri.

About the author we say only what the colophon in the source says. By it, the ashtaka was composed by Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswami, described as born of the lotus hand of Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswami, that is, his disciple. We give no date.

We give the text as it stands on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. The syntax of verses 4 and 5 is hard, and there we give the gist of our reading, not a word by word rendering.

For life today

When we scour a vessel with ash or tamarind and keep washing, the dull surface slowly begins to shine. It is the same vessel, and only the grime has gone. The name Malahanikareshvara reminds us of this.

Our minds too need a little washing each day. For that we can sit quietly for a moment in the evening and let go of the day’s bitter words.
