This is a hymn in praise of the sage Rishyashringa. In the Ramayana story he is the son of the sage Vibhandaka, and tradition says that rain came through the strength of his austerity. Nine of the ten verses close with a word of salutation.

This delightful hymn was composed by one named Nrisimha, who worships the lotus feet of Sharada, is firmly seated on the noble seat of Shankaracharya, and was born from the hand of the guru whose nature is being, knowledge and bliss.
Wherever this hymn of the sage Rishyashringa is recited, says the text, may good rain fall there, bringing abundance of wealth and grain.
About this hymn
Rishyashringa means the sage with a horn. Verse 1 says he is the son of the sage Vibhandaka. Verse 4 speaks of his dwelling on the bank of the Tunga, and verse 5 of his ending the drought of the Tunga and Anga lands.
About the author we say only what the colophon in the source and verse 10 say. Verse 10 says it was composed by one named Nrisimha, and the colophon names him as the Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswami. We give no date.
We give the text as it stands on the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. After the ten verses there is a closing phalashruti of two lines, which speaks of rain and abundance of wealth and grain.
We take some words as follows. Shantadhipa means the husband of Shanta (tradition says Shanta was Rishyashringa’s wife) or the lord of the peaceful. Tungangadesha means the lands of Tunga and Anga. Some doubt remains over both.
· Source: the stotra section of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham website (sringeri.net). Where readings differ, the difference is noted here.
For life today
When the first rain comes after a dry spell, the scent of earth rises, the leaves shine, and all of us look outside for a moment. The hymn asks for rain out of the awareness that we depend on a gift we cannot command.
Gratitude rises naturally after such a rain. We can pause in the same way, for a moment, to give thanks for the small helps that come to us through the day.
