The Narmadashtakam praises the river Narmada as a goddess. Every one of the eight verses closes with the same call: O Goddess Narmada, I bow to your lotus feet. Before that, each verse tells what she gives, and to whom.
Waves, fish, tortoises, crocodiles, chakravaka birds and the sages of the bank all appear together in it. The ninth verse tells the fruit of reciting.

Your stream is adorned by waves that tumble and break, carrying drops of spray. Your water is the foe of the births that spring from sin. O Goddess Narmada, giver of the armour that removes fear of Yama’s messengers, of Time and of spirits, I bow to your lotus feet.
You give a divine gift even to the poor fishes that dwell in your water. In the Kali age you take away the burden of heaps of sin, and you are chief of all tirthas. O Narmada, giver of comfort to the shoals of fish, tortoises, crocodiles and chakravaka birds, I bow to your lotus feet.
The flood of your very deep water plunges down and washes the earth. It removes all the sins of those who bow and splits the very mountain of calamity. O Narmada, who gave a dwelling to Markandeya, son of Mrikandu, in the great fear when the world dissolves, I bow to your lotus feet.
My fear left me the moment I looked upon your water. Markandeya, Shaunaka and the foe of the asuras ever serve it. O Narmada, giver of armour against the sorrow of the ocean of rebirth and the ocean of birth, I bow to your lotus feet.
Countless kinnaras, gods, asuras and others worship you. Your clear banks echo with the calls of hundreds of thousands of birds. O Narmada, giver of comfort to Vasishtha, the noble Pippalada, Kardama and others, I bow to your lotus feet.
Sanatkumara, Nachiketa, Kashyapa and Atri, like bees, hold your feet in their own minds, and so do Narada and the other bee-like sages. O Narmada, giver of comfort to the deeds of the Sun, the Moon, Rantideva and the king of the gods, I bow to your lotus feet.
Your foot is like a weapon turned on countless hundreds of thousands of sins, and it grants worldly enjoyment and liberation to the thread of living beings. O Narmada, giver of protection to the own abodes of Brahma, Vishnu and Shankara, I bow to your lotus feet.
Ah, O you born of the locks of Mahesha, on your bank your sound has been heard by the hunter, the charioteer, the brahmin, the scholar, the rogue and the actor alike. O Narmada, who take away the heat of unending sin and give comfort to all beings, I bow to your lotus feet.
Those who recite this Narmadashtakam always, at the three times of the day, never go to a bad end. Having easily gained the honour of Mahesha’s abode, so hard for the embodied to reach, they do not see the hell Raurava when they are born again, so the verse on the fruit declares.
About this hymn
This hymn is from the website of the Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham. Tradition ascribes it to Shankara Bhagavatpada. We give no date of composition.
Though it is called an ashtaka, the source has nine verses. The first eight praise the river and carry the closing refrain. The ninth gives the fruit and does not carry that refrain.
Some parts are not certain in sense. In verse one we take papajatajatakari to mean the foe of the births that spring from sin. In verse two we take kaccha as tortoise, though it can also mean a bank. The first line of verse seven is very unclear and we give only its gist. In verse eight we split maheshakeshajatate as: O you born of Mahesha’s locks, and take badavesu as brahmin.

For life today
After everything has gone to sleep, we hear a faraway river through the window at night. It was there in the daytime too, but the day’s clamour kept it from our ears. That sound flows the same way for whoever happens to listen.
In verse eight the hunter, the scholar and the actor hear Narmada’s sound on the same bank. In a sound that reaches everyone alike, the mind slowly settles. At such moments of the night the feeling of this verse may come close to us.
